Explosion Not Cause of Anambra, Enugu Blackout, TCN Counters EEDC

The Transmission Company of Nigeria has dismissed claims by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC that an explosion at its Onitsha Sub-Region station was responsible for the recent power outage in parts of Anambra State and Oji River in Enugu State. According to a statement signed by GM, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, on Thursday, the company said it was “compelled to correct the misinformation recently published by Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC on August 27, 2025, regarding the cause of the power outage in Anambra State and Oji River in Enugu State. “Contrary to EEDC’s claim, there was no explosion at the Transmission Company of Nigeria station at Onitsha Sub-Region.” Explaining the actual cause of the incident, TCN noted that the partial loss of power in the 330kv switch yard at Onitsha Sub-Region occurred on August 21, 2025, at about 02:34 hours. It said the outage was due to “an insulation flashover of porcelain insulator (P1) of the red phase jumper conductor to bus bar 1 due to rainfall.” The company disclosed that power was restored the same day at 17:54 hours. It further stated that a planned scheduled outage had already been arranged for August 31 and September 1, 2025, to replace the stack porcelain insulators. “We clarify that there was no explosion of equipment or loss of switchgear equipment in the TCN Onitsha region,” the statement stressed. TCN also urged EEDC to ensure due diligence in its communication with the public, warning that “deliberate deception or propaganda is unprofessional and unacceptable.” Recall that electricity customers in Anambra State and parts of Enugu State were thrown into darkness on Wednesday following what they thought was an explosion in the Awada area of Anambra. The incident, which occurred around 2:34 a.m., disrupted the power supply across affected areas. Confirming the development, the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC, through its Group Head of Corporate Communications, Emeka Ezeh, attributed the blackout to the explosion at the TCN facility.   A 33-year-old man, Ikechukwu Okoye, and his 39-year-old girlfriend, Juliet Ogbodo, have been arrested by the Enugu State Police Command for allegedly kidnapping and murdering a 70-year-old woman, Mrs. Mary Nwatu. The suspects, both from Onuorie-Obuno in Akpugo Community, Nkanu West Local Government Area of the state, reportedly killed the victim and buried her in a shallow grave before demanding a ransom of N6 million from her children. They were apprehended after receiving N20,000 from the family, ostensibly to facilitate a phone call with the victim. In a statement issued Thursday night, the command’s spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed that the arrest was carried out by the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Tactical Squad following credible intelligence. According to Ndukwe, preliminary investigations revealed that Mrs. Nwatu was reported missing on September 15, 2024. “On October 5, 2024, the principal suspect, Ikechukwu Okoye, who is also a kinsman of the victim, contacted her children, demanding a ransom of N6 million,” Ndukwe stated. Okoye was subsequently arrested and reportedly confessed to the crime. “He admitted abducting Mrs. Nwatu on September 14, 2024, at about 8 am when she came to their house to look for his mother. “He further confessed to killing her and burying her in a shallow grave inside an uncompleted building in the compound.” the police officer said. The suspect also admitted to demanding a ransom from the victim’s children, initially requesting N6 million before negotiating down to N3 million. However, he accepted an initial payment of N20,000 on the condition that the family would hear their mother’s voice over the phone before making further payments. Juliet Ogbodo, Okoye’s girlfriend, also confessed during interrogation to being aware of the crime but claimed she did not report it to authorities out of fear. The victim’s remains have since been exhumed and deposited in a mortuary for preservation and autopsy. Ndukwe assured all that the suspects, along with any other individuals found complicit, would be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations. “The Enugu State Police Command remains committed to ensuring justice for the victim and her family,” Ndukwe said.

Student’s ‘Reckless’ Celebration Of Final Year Exams Kills One,Multiple Injured At IMT Enugu

A female student was tragically killed and two others injured when a fellow student, celebrating the conclusion of final year exams, drove recklessly with friends in a motorcade at the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu. An eyewitness reported that the graduating student lost control of the vehicle, which then barreled into a crowd of students. A video circulating on WhatsApp captures the aftermath of the accident, showing students lifting the car in a desperate attempt to free the body of the victim trapped beneath. In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Acting Rector of IMT, Emeka Ejim, clarified that the deceased was not an IMT student but a student from Peaceland College, who was on campus to sign out one of the injured students. He also confirmed that two other students from the Public Administration Department sustained injuries in the crash. They are currently receiving medical treatment at Posh Hospital in the New Haven area of Enugu. One of the injured, an HND II student, is set to be transferred to the Orthopaedic Hospital in Enugu for further care after X-rays revealed a leg fracture. Mr. Ejim announced that, in light of the incident, the institute has suspended all final year examinations indefinitely. He underscored that the institution had repeatedly warned students against engaging in unruly celebrations. An emergency meeting of the school’s Academic Board and management has been scheduled for Wednesday, October 2, 2024, to discuss the issue further. The institution’s spokesperson, Mark Eze, confirmed the suspension, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation into this tragic event. “Despite our warnings, some students chose to celebrate dangerously, leading to this unfortunate incident,” Mr. Eze lamented.
