BREAKING: Wike Withdraws PDP National Secretariat Land Allocation

The Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has revoked the land of the Peoples Democratic Party’s national secretariat, which is situated in Abuja. Wike issued the revocation notice in a letter dated March 13, 2025, titled, “Notice of right of occupancy with file no: MISC 81346 in respect of plot no: 243 within central area district, Abuja,” on Tuesday. It was signed by the Director, Land Administration (FTC), Chijioke Nwankwoeze. According to him, the opposition party has failed to pay the annual ground rents due on the property for twenty (20) years, from January 1, 2006, to January 1, 2025, despite many publications in several national dailies and electronic media to pay up every outstanding bill and ground rent on its property. The letter read, “I have been directed to refer to the above Right of Occupancy granted to PEOPLES DEMOCRATIC PARTY (PDP), NATIONAL SECRETARIAT and inform you that the Minister of Federal Capital Territory has in the exercise of powers conferred on him under the Land Use Act No. 6 of 1978, Cap. L5, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, revoked your rights, interests and privileges over Plot No. 243 within Central Area, Cadastral Zone A00, Abuja. “The revocation is in view of your continued contravention of the terms and conditions of grant of the Right of Occupancy by failing to pay the annual ground rents due on the property for twenty (20) years, from Ist of January 2006 to 1st of January 2025. This is despite the many publications made by the FCT Administration since 2023 in several national dailies and on electronic media requesting all allottees of plots in the Federal Capital Territory to pay up every outstanding bill and ground rent on their property. “You would please note that the said breaches by PEOPLES DEMOCRATIC PARTY (PDP), NATIONAL SECRETARIAT (MISC 81346) run contrary to the provisions of Section 28, Subsection 5 (a) and (b) of the Land Use Act.” The minister added that the FCTA administration he led will henceforth take immediate possession of the party secretariat until all bills are settled. Fuel Subsidy Removal: Senate Leader Defends Tinubu, Blames Cabal

The Leader of the Senate, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, has explained the challenges faced by President Bola Tinubu in the first 18 months of his administration, particularly in relation to the removal of the fuel subsidy. Bamidele, the Senator representing Ekiti Central in the Senate, said the key beneficiaries of the subsidy, rather than ordinary citizens, were the ones who made governance difficult for the president. The lawmaker stated this in a statement issued by his Directorate of Media and Public Affairs on Monday. He said that the individuals who had access to the subsidy, mostly members of a powerful cabal, were responsible for undermining the administration. Bamidele stressed that the removal of the subsidy was a necessary move in the public interest and that it was in line with an agreement made by the 9th National Assembly. “I am convinced that the president did the right thing by removing the fuel subsidy, for which the 9th National Assembly made provision till May 2023. However, the people who made governance difficult for President Tinubu were those benefiting from fuel subsidies. “It was not common men and women of this country who were benefiting from the fuel subsidy. It was not. It was members of the cabal who had access to the fuel subsidy. They are the ones taking away this privilege all in the name and on behalf of the masses. And the masses did not benefit from it. “I was part of the 9th National Assembly. At that time, we had agreed with the executive arm that the fuel subsidy should be removed because it was no longer in the overriding interest of the country. The Tinubu administration acted based on the policy direction the National Assembly approved before his inauguration on May 29, 2023,” the senate leader noted. Bamidele further clarified that the National Assembly had only allocated funds for the subsidy until May 2023, meaning that the subsidy would have ended shortly after President Tinubu’s inauguration, regardless of his announcement. He argued that retaining the subsidy would have plunged the country into a fiscal crisis, as the funds could not be sustained, and would have led to cuts in crucial transfers to sub-national governments. “In the 2023 budget, the National Assembly only made provision for fuel subsidy till May 2023. Whether President Tinubu was removed at his inauguration or not, there was no longer funding for subsidy because we did not make provision for it beyond May 2023. “He did not say he was going to remove the fuel subsidy. He simply said that the fuel subsidy was gone simply because the National Assembly only made provision for it till May 2023. Even if he did not say it, the fuel subsidy would have gone in two days after his inauguration.” The Senate leader expressed confidence that the 2025 Appropriation Act would address the country’s socio-economic challenges, not just at the national level but also at the state and local levels. He emphasised that although the increased statutory transfers to sub-national governments were often overlooked, they were crucial for driving development across Nigeria. He also pointed out that the Federal Government had shifted its budgetary focus, allocating less to recurrent expenditure and more to capital expenditure. This, he said, represented a major change from past practices and a move towards more sustainable spending. “What is important is to get the focus of the budget at the national level and sub-national levels right. “What is the focus of the 2025 budget being passed? Does it address the welfare of the people? Does it prioritise the critical sector of the economy, including education? What is the scale of attention being paid to health and social welfare? What is the percentage of the budget going to agriculture? “Compared to the previous fiscal years, the federal government is devoting less to recurrent expenditure while more is being devoted to capital expenditure. That is a major shift from what had been in practice since the return to democracy. It means we are spending less on consumables,” he stated. Bamidele also praised President Tinubu’s decision not to retrench public workers despite the economic challenges facing the country. He explained that such a decision would exacerbate the problems the country was already facing, particularly with regard to the security situation, which had disrupted agricultural activities. He expressed optimism that the security situation was improving and that, over time, conditions would get better, allowing displaced persons to return home and farmers to resume their activities. The Senate leader concluded by stating that the steps taken by the government were necessary to stabilise the economy and set the country on a path of recovery, even though challenges remained. He urged the public to focus on the broader picture of national and sub-national development and the long-term benefits of the administration’s policies. The leader added, “Retrenching workers is not an option before this administration because it will cause more problems. Look at our situation. *We are confronted with grave security challenges that nearly erode the gains of the administration, especially in the area of agriculture. This is mainly because people could no longer go to farms. It was quite a bad situation, but we are gradually coming out of it. “While it is not yet Uhuru, the security situation is fast improving across the federation today. Some of the IDPs are gradually relocating to their base. Farmers are too steadily returning to their farms. Altogether, things are improving. I am sure that things will be different very soon.” Punch

US Varsity To Lay Off 2000 Employees, Cites Termination Of USAID

US university Johns Hopkins on Thursday announced plans to lay off more than 2,000 of its employees around the globe, noting that the move is coming on the heels of President Donald Trump’s administration’s massive reduction in foreign aid funds. In a statement made available by the school on Thursday, the leading scientific said, “This is a difficult day for our entire community. The termination of more than $800 million in USAID funding is now forcing us to wind down critical work.” The university is based in Baltimore, Maryland, the largest city an hour’s drive north of the US capital, but is eliminating at least 1,975 jobs in projects across 44 countries and 247 jobs in the United States. New US President Donald Trump and his senior advisor, billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk, have embarked on a campaign to slash federal spending, targeting in particular support from the US Agency for International Development (USAID) for foreign aid, research and development. Johns Hopkins University is one of the institutions hardest hit by these drastic reductions. In early March, its president Ronald Daniels explained in a message to students and professors that federal money accounted for nearly half of the backing it funds received last year. Referring to a “historical relationship” between the “first American research university” and the government, he warned that students, researchers and professors would see damage to programs designed to improve health, hygiene and medicine across the world. – Drinking water – Thursday’s announcement confirmed that the cuts hit the university’s medical school and school of public health as well as Jhpiego, a global non-profit organization founded more than 50 years ago and which works to improve health in countries worldwide. “Johns Hopkins is immensely proud of the work done by our colleagues in Jhpiego, the Bloomberg School of Public Health, and the School of Medicine to care for mothers and infants, fight disease, provide clean drinking water, and advance countless other critical, life-saving efforts around the world,” the university said. The university receives roughly $1 billion annually in funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and is currently running 600 clinical trials, according to The New York Times, which added that Hopkins is one of the plaintiffs in a federal lawsuit challenging such cuts. USAID, the largest funding agency for Jhpiego, distributes humanitarian aid around the world, with health and emergency programs in around 120 countries. Trump, whose appointees are dismantling the humanitarian agency, signed an executive order in January demanding a freeze on all US foreign aid to allow time to assess expenses. Critics warn that slashing USAID work will endanger millions of lives. Punch

UK Teen Sentenced To Life For Killing Schoolgirl Over Teddy Bear

A London court, on Thursday, sentenced a teenage boy to life in prison for stabbing to death a 15-year-old schoolgirl in a row over a teddy bear. Hassan Sentamu, 18, was ordered to spend a minimum of 23 years in jail for knifing to death Elianne Andam in Croydon, south London, on her way to school in September 2023. She was attacked by Sentamu, the ex-boyfriend of her friend after a dispute between the pair over returning each other’s belongings, including the soft toy. Sentamu, who was 17 at the time of the killing, was found guilty of murder and having a knife in January following a trial. Passing sentence, judge Bobbie Cheema-Grubb told Sentamu that he was driven by his “short temper and aggressive tendencies” condemning his actions as “senseless and evil”. “Elianne was 15 when you murdered her, she will always remain just 15, she will never realise the potential of her life,” she said. The judge added Sentamu had carried on “mercilessly killing her on the floor as she begged for mercy. You walked away showing no remorse as if her life meant nothing”. Sentamu, who the court heard acted in a “white hot rage” after feeling he had been teased by the two girls the day before the killing, sat with head in his hands in the dock and wiped away tears as he was sentenced. The killing is one of a string of fatal knife attacks involving teenagers that have horrified the nation. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has called rising knife crime a “national crisis”. Elianne’s father, Michael Andam, told the court: “The thought of her final moments torments me – wondering if she was calling out for me, hoping I would save her – but I wasn’t there. I couldn’t protect her”. Elianne’s mother Dorcas Andam said her daughter had dreamed of becoming a lawyer. She described her as the “kindest, most loving daughter” who was “vibrant, creative, and purposeful”. She loved to sing and braid hair. “Now the music has stopped, the laughter is gone. All that remains is a deafening silence,” she said in a victim impact statement. AFP

Tinubu’s Reforms Will Earn Him Favourable Place In History – Minister

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu will be judged favourably by history, citing his commitment to Nigeria’s progress and governance with a sense of divine responsibility Speaking at the Ministerial Press Briefing Session in Abuja on Thursday, Idris stated that Tinubu’s ongoing reforms, though demanding, are necessary to reposition the country for long-term stability and development. “We have crossed the Rubicon, and the pains are gradually easing as the positive impact of these reforms begins to manifest. Already, we are witnessing a reduction in food prices, stability in exchange rates, and a gradual decline in petroleum product costs—clear indicators that the policies are yielding results,” Idris said. He acknowledged that transformative reforms are often met with resistance due to their immediate hardships but stressed that they are essential for national progress. “Across the world, history has shown that meaningful reforms are never easy; they require sacrifice, resilience, and a commitment to long-term progress. The initial difficulties that accompany these changes are a necessary price for a more stable and prosperous future,” the minister added. While appreciating Nigerians for their patience and support, Idris urged religious leaders to take advantage of the sacred seasons of Ramadan and Lent to pray for the country’s peace, security, and development. “I want to appeal to our Muslim and Christian leaders to continue offering prayers for Nigeria. With unity, faith, and collective effort, we will emerge stronger and more resilient,” he said. Also present at the briefing, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, highlighted their ministries’ achievements as part of the administration’s efforts to drive national development.
