Ooni of Ife Confers Jaran Title on Chief S.A. Awojoodu

The House of Oduduwa, Ile-Oodua, has announced the elevation of Alhaji Chief Sakariyau Ayinde Awojoodu from the position of Yegbata (Olori Emese) of the Emese Court to the revered title of Jaran of Ile-Ife. The announcement was made on Saturday by Chief Lowa Abraham Adekola Adeyeye, in accordance with the directive of His Imperial Majesty, Arole Oduduwa Olofin Adimula, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, CFR, Ojaja II, Co-Chairman of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN) and Chairman of the Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council (SNTRC). Expressing gratitude to God and appreciation to the Ooni, Alhaji Awojoodu, fondly called Allah Dey by friends and associates—described his promotion as a profound honour and a renewed call to service. “I give thanks to Almighty God for taking me this far; it has not been easy, but His grace has sustained me,” he said. “I also extend my sincere appreciation to our Baba, the Oonirisa, Oba Babatunde Enitan Ogunwusi, for recognizing my contributions to the palace, the throne of Arole Oduduwa, and the general development of Ile-Ife. I am deeply grateful for this elevation, and I promise to do even more in service to humanity.” Alhaji Chief Awojoodu, also known as Hajji Mimo, began his palace career in March 1985 following the death of his father, Baba Lowa Kasali Awojoodu, on February 27, 1985. He was inducted as a young Emese to fill the vacancy left by his father. The Emeses serve as the royal guards of the Ooni, trained extensively in palace tradition and cultural rites to support the monarch within and outside the palace. Over the course of 40 years, Chief Awojoodu rose through the hierarchical ranks—starting as an Emese, then Loodoko, later Yegbata (Olori Emese), a title he held for about a decade—until his recent elevation to Jaran. “It took me 40 years to get here. Some of the people I started with are no more, and even some who came after me have passed on. It is by God’s grace that I remain,” Alhaji Sakariyau reflected. Known for his loyalty, humility, neatness, and generosity, Chief Awojoodu served as a personal assistant to the late Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade Olubuse II, for many years. During Oba Sijuwade’s reign, he played significant roles in reforms that reshaped the monarchical hierarchy, including the upgrading of several Baales to Obas in various Ife communities, efforts that earned him admiration at home and abroad. A retired primary school administrator, he served in various schools across Osun State and was once Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Ife South Local Government chapter. He remains one of the most respected aides of the Ooni. According to Chief Awojoodu, the title Jaran is the second-in-command to the Lowa. The Ooni of Ife is traditionally advised by sixteen high chiefs—“Ijoye Merindinlogun lo n ba Olufe gbimoran”—with the Jaran being one of the key voices expected to play critical roles in decision-making at the apex of Ile-Ife’s traditional institution. Since the official announcement, friends, family, and well-wishers have flooded the new Jaran with congratulatory messages, praying for long life, sound health, and continued service to the sacred throne of Oduduwa.

Oladapo Rolls Out Ambitious Plans as Oyo NUJ Election Gains Momentum

Ahead of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council election slated for December, one of the leading contenders for the chairmanship position, Comrade Olusola Oladapo “Summer”, has formally unveiled his agenda for the Union, promising a leadership focused on welfare, capacity-building, transparency and unity.   The flag-off of his electioneering campaign, held on Thursday at the Press Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan, drew members, stakeholders and senior figures in the state’s media community, all gathered to hear the candidate outline his vision for the Council.   Oladapo, who currently serves as the Secretary of the Council, said his ambition “is driven by a desire to reposition the Union as a model of welfare, professionalism and ethical journalism.”   The Director-General of his campaign, Dare Adekanmbi, described the moment as “a new dawn for journalists in Oyo State,” adding that if Oladapo is elected, members would begin to experience a union that truly protects their welfare, expands professional opportunities and restores dignity to the practice.   Adekanmbi said the agenda being presented is rooted in transparency, inclusiveness and service, assuring journalists that “under Oladapo, NUJ Oyo will not only work for journalists but will stand by them in every moment that matters.”   Speaking on his manifesto, Oladapo assured journalists that his administration, if elected, would prioritise dignity, protection and economic empowerment of every member, including establishing a Welfare and Emergency Fund to support colleagues during health challenges, bereavement or sudden hardship.   According to him, journalists in the state deserved better structures of support, saying he plans to secure group health insurance, provide safety kits annually for field workers and create a legal aid and safety desk to protect members from harassment or unlawful arrest during the discharge of their duties.   He also announced plans to introduce consistent training programmes to strengthen the professional capacity of journalists in the state, saying quarterly workshops on digital reporting, data journalism and investigative techniques would become standard under his leadership.   Oladapo added that an NUJ Training and Resource Centre would be established at the Press Centre, equipped with internet access, research tools and digital facilities to support reporters, editors and young media practitioners across the state.   The chairmanship hopeful further emphasised economic empowerment as a major part of his agenda, promising to support media entrepreneurship by facilitating grants and business development training for journalists interested in starting online platforms, podcasts or production outfits.   He noted that partnerships would be pursued with financial institutions and cooperative societies to provide soft loans, support small businesses and establish a Media Investment Cooperative that would give members financial leverage and sustainability.   On transparency, Oladapo stated that he would publish quarterly financial reports and implement an open-door policy that allows every member access to information on spending, projects and operations of the Union, saying NUJ Oyo must “become the most transparent Council in Nigeria.”   He also pledged to build stronger unity among the various chapels within the state and ensure gender balance, inclusiveness for freelancers and improved engagement with retired journalists through an alumni forum dedicated to welfare and mentorship.   Oladapo revealed plans to upgrade the Press Centre into a modern media hub, complete with a digital studio, ICT-equipped conference rooms and a co-working space capable of generating revenue for the Union, alongside a digital membership database and mobile app to improve efficiency.   He said partnerships with government institutions, corporate bodies, NGOs and international media organisations would be strengthened to create more opportunities, training platforms and protections for journalists working in the state.   Addressing rumours that he had spent too many years in NUJ leadership, Oladapo said service is not a crime, adding that those who are active in union activities are naturally the ones called upon to lead. “Leadership requires experience, not popularity,” he said, noting that he has served two terms as Chapel Secretary, two terms as State Ex-Officio, and later as Vice Chairman before becoming the current Council Secretary.   He concluded by urging members to support his campaign and join in building a future where NUJ Oyo becomes a Union known for welfare, innovation and unwavering commitment to ethical journalism. Among the dignitaries that graced the occasion was the Chairman and Chief Executive of Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS), Mrs. Dotun Olaitan; the Zonal Director of the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, Dr. Moses Oyelade; leaders of the NUJ Oyo State Council including former Chairmen, Chief Gbemiga Ayoade and Mr. Adewumi Faniran, among others.

APC Plans Appearance as US Congress Debates ‘Christian genocide’ Today

The United States chapter of the All Progressives Congress has requested to testify today (Thursday) before the United States House Subcommittee on Africa as American lawmakers prepare to review former President Donald Trump’s redesignation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged religious persecution. In a letter forwarded to the Subcommittee Chairman, Chris Smith, the APC USA said it was prepared to lead a high-level delegation to provide what it described as firsthand intelligence and verifiable data on Nigeria’s security landscape. The APC USA Chairman, Prof Tai Balofin, disclosed this in a statement added available to journalists in Abuja. Balofin said that while the party supports religious freedom for all Nigerians, global discourse on the matter often fails to reflect the full complexity of the nation’s insecurity challenges. He said the delegation was ready to appear before Congress at short notice. “The narrative that is sometimes presented abroad risks oversimplifying a complex security crisis driven by banditry, resource conflicts, climate stress, and transnational crime, not solely by religious persecution. We owe it to the American people and to millions of Nigerians to ensure Congress hears the complete picture before conclusions are drawn.” Balofin said the group’s planned testimony would highlight what it considers notable security gains under President Bola Tinubu. He added, “These include progress in degrading terrorist networks, improvements in community-based early-warning systems, and initiatives that promote interfaith harmony. Recent reductions in attacks across several hotspots have been documented by both Nigerian authorities and independent international monitors.” The APC USA also plans to present proposals for stronger U.S.–Nigeria cooperation on security, intelligence sharing and humanitarian support, arguing that such collaboration is vital for protecting all religious groups without undermining diplomatic relations. He said, “Chairman Chris Smith has been a consistent champion for human rights and religious liberty worldwide. We respectfully ask him to grant APC USA—the official voice of Nigeria’s democratically elected government in the United States—the opportunity to contribute to a fair, accurate, and solution-oriented discussion.” The development comes hours after Nigeria faulted the United States for excluding it from a UN event hosted by American rapper Nicki Minaj on alleged killings of Nigerians from a particular faith group. Nigeria’s chargé d’affaires to the UN, Syndoph Endoni, condemned the exclusion, saying deciding Nigeria’s case without Nigerian representation amounted to “shaving our head in our absence.” The event, held at the UN headquarters in New York with the backing of the U.S. Mission, was organised amid renewed U.S. allegations of Christian persecution in Nigeria — accusations Nigeria has repeatedly denied. Endoni said, “It is important to ensure the country concerned in the ongoing allegations of genocide against Christians is present, aware and has a voice in the matter. This is because you should not make important decisions or take action on something that involves a country without their presence or consent.” He expressed disappointment that while a few countries and even a Nigerian pastor were invited, officials of the Nigerian government were deliberately left out. According to him, U.S. officials later explained that the event was “private” and that the organisers demanded no Nigerian government representatives be invited due to fears of “reprisals” against participants. Endoni warned that such unilateral actions could escalate tensions, adding that both countries could more effectively address insecurity by working together and ensuring inclusive engagement. The Nigerian envoy said Abuja would continue to engage Washington over killings by extremist groups and collaborate on efforts to protect lives and property nationwide. The PUNCH had earlier reported that the US House of Representatives Subcommittee on Africa will on Thursday, November 20, 2025, examine President Donald Trump’s recent redesignation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern. The CPC designation, if ratified by the Senate, would allow the US to impose sanctions on Nigerian officials found complicit in religious persecution and limit certain forms of bilateral assistance. It also signals to the international community that religious freedom in Nigeria remains under serious threat. The hearing, scheduled for 11:00 am in Room 2172 of the Rayburn House Office Building and available via live webcast, will be chaired by Representative Chris Smith (R-NJ). It will feature two panels of witnesses, including senior US State Department officials and Nigerian religious leaders. The invite to the members of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, sighted by It reads, “You are respectfully requested to attend an open hearing of the Committee on Foreign Affairs to be held by the Subcommittee on Africa at 11:00 a.m. in Room 2172 of the Rayburn House Office Building.” According to the invite, panelists will include Senior Bureau Official of the Bureau of African Affairs, Jonathan Pratt, and Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, Jacob McGee. The second panel will feature the Director of the Center for Religious Freedom, Ms Nina Shea; Bishop Wilfred Anagbe of Makurdi Catholic Diocese in Nigeria; and Ms Oge Onubogu of the Center for Strategic & International Studies. The congressional hearing is expected to review not only the scope of religious persecution in Nigeria but also potential policy responses, including targeted sanctions, humanitarian assistance, and collaboration with Nigerian authorities to prevent further violence. On October 31, 2025, President Trump designated Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern for religious freedom violations. The move has sparked debate over rising attacks on Christians in Nigeria and the possibility of US intervention. In designating Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern,” Trump cited alleged severe violations of religious freedom, particularly the persecution of Christians. He claimed that Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria, with thousands of Christians being killed by radical Islamists. Trump warned that the US would take action, including potential military intervention, if Nigeria did not address the issue. The US President also threatened to halt all aid and assistance to Nigeria should President Bola Tinubu’s administration fail to end the alleged persecution and killing of Christians. “If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the USA will immediately stop … Read more

Fear in Kwara: 3 Killed, 35 Abducted as State Closes Schools, Seeks Military Base

The Kwara State Government, on Wednesday, directed the closure of schools across four Local government areas amid escalating insecurity in the affected communities. The government’s decision was disclosed by the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Kwara State Wing, on Wednesday. In a circular issued on Wednesday and obtained by The PUNCH, the NUT Chairman, Yusuf Agboola, announced the shutdown of schools in Isin, Irepodun, Ifelodun, and Ekiti LGAs. Agboola explained that the union was acting strictly on instructions from the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development after the government raised concerns over fresh security threats in Kwara South. “Comrade chairmen, this is to inform you and through you, all schools in the above local governments of the instruction to close down all schools with immediate effect until further notice,” the circular read. “This decision was occasioned by the security challenges ravaging the area and the efforts of the government to control the situation. Treat this information as important and with the urgency it deserves, as it emanated from the ministry.” He assured school heads and teachers that further directives would be communicated as the situation evolves. On Wednesday, Kwara State Governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, also announced plans to seek the establishment of a Forward Operating Base of the Nigerian Army and a Mobile Police Squadron in Eruku, Ekiti Local Government Area, following Tuesday night’s deadly bandit attack on a church in the community, which left three worshippers dead and over 35 abducted. The governor, who visited Eruku for an on-the-spot assessment, disclosed that he had spoken with the General Officer Commanding, 2 Division, and the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on the urgent security upgrade needed in the crisis-hit area. “We will speak with the GOC to see that we have a Forward Operating Base in Eruku to enhance security here and also talk to the Inspector General of Police about establishing a mobile squadron here,” Abdulrazaq said. “It is indeed unfortunate what happened yesterday despite all the effort we have been making. Our main purpose here is to commiserate with the people of the community. All the security agencies are on this. The President had to cancel his trip to the G-20 because of this incident and that of Kebbi State. So the President is aware and we are on top of the situation,” he added. Community recounts ordeal For many residents, the governor’s visit came after a harrowing night of fear, bloodshed, and unanswered pleas for help. One of the victims, Adesuyi Joshua, whose wife and granddaughter were among those abducted, recounted the horror. “They took my wife and our granddaughter, who were in the church, along with about 30 other people. At first, we thought the gunshots were knockouts, but the sound changed. By the time we mobilised ourselves to confront the attackers, it was too late,” he said. He accused security agents, especially the police, of worsening the situation instead of assisting the community. “We have soldiers around this place. We also have a police station, but nothing was done throughout the attack. “When we were pursuing the bandits, the police started shooting from their gate. We thought it was the bandits again. When we got to the station, they tear-gassed us and allowed the attackers to escape,” he alleged. Another youth leader, Shola Peters, also accused the police of failing the community despite benefitting from local support. “These are the same police officers the town supported. We built houses for the DPO and the men. When we needed them most, they failed us. “Instead of joining us to pursue the bandits, they stopped us. The Inspector General needs to probe the Eruku division. All they do here is harass young boys and tag them as Yahoo boys or cultists. “We need the Commissioner of Police and the Inspector General to come and probe the police. We don’t want them again. Let the government give us guns; we can protect ourselves.” He added that despite having only “a Dane gun and one pump-action,” the youths confronted the armed attackers. “Their firepower was too much. They came with AK-49 rifles and machine guns.” Speaking earlier with The PUNCH, the President Pastor of the attacked church, Pastor Lawrence Abiodun Bamidele, said the congregation was holding a thanksgiving service for 18 kidnapped residents freed last week when the bandits struck. “We are doing Thanksgiving service for the 18 people who were kidnapped three weeks ago, and all of them were rescued. We were thanking God for their safe return, not knowing that danger was lurking around. “The incident happened unexpectedly and so fast. They came in and surrounded the church, shooting sporadically. Some who ran outside were shot from a tree, which one of the bandits climbed. “In the pandemonium, three people died on the spot, and about 35 church members were kidnapped. We need government assistance. This attack is the first of its kind in Kwara State in a church.” The Ekiti LGA Christian Association of Nigeria Coordinator, Pastor Kenneth Adigoke, expressed deep concern, warning that the attack could be interpreted as an assault on the Christian community. “This attack is just like a direct assault on the Christian community and the body of Christ. “Look at the situation that happened yesterday, they entered the church and killed three people on the spot, and kidnapped about 35. If they said there is genocide against the church or the Christian community, it can be justified. “People are not happy. We want the government to handle this insecurity issue dispassionately, and we believe that with prayers, the issue will be tackled.” Protesters block the highway. Earlier in the day, hundreds of angry youths barricaded the Ilorin–Kabba Expressway to protest what they described as “total abandonment” by security agencies during the attack. When The PUNCH visited around 1:30 pm, bonfires, stones, and logs blocked the highway, leaving dozens of trailers and commercial vehicles stranded. Residents insisted the attack lasted almost an hour without any intervention from security operatives reportedly … Read more

The Kingsway Health and Outreach Foundation has successfully concluded a large-scale community health programme across Akinyele Local Government, marking one of the most impactful medical interventions recently witnessed in the area. The health outreach initiative held on Thursday funded with millions of naira by Dr. Amuda Hafeez Kingsway, a 2027 Oyo State House of Assembly aspirant, recorded a massive turnout and delivered comprehensive healthcare services to residents at no cost. According to the foundation, 58 medical experts were on ground, attending to residents simultaneously across various medical units, ensuring swift, efficient, and quality service delivery throughout the programme. BREAKING: Court Stops PDP Convention, Orders Inclusion of Sule Lamido

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Friday ordered the Peoples Democratic Party to suspend its national convention scheduled to take place in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16. Delivering judgment in the suit instituted by former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, Justice Peter Lifu restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission from supervising, monitoring or recognising any convention conducted by the PDP without including the plaintiff as a contestant. Lifu held that the evidence before the court established that Lamido was unjustly denied the opportunity to obtain a nomination form to contest for the position of National Chairman of the party, in violation of the PDP Constitution and its internal regulations. The court affirmed that the PDP was duty-bound to create opportunities for its members to serve by adopting deliberate measures that enable them to pursue their political aspirations. As a consequential order, Justice Lifu directed that the planned convention be put on hold to allow Lamido to obtain the nomination form, mobilise supporters and conduct his campaign. “An order is hereby made that before any convention is held, the PDP is to make nomination forms available to the plaintiff. “In the light of the above, it is hereby held that the convention be put on hold for the plaintiff to obtain a nomination form, campaign and mobilise supporters,” the judge declared.
