The authenticity of the apparent chat shown during the livestream could not be independently verified.

Osun Poll: APC Urges Adeleke to Stop Blaming Tinubu for His Challenges

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke to stop blaming President Bola Tinubu and leaders of the ruling party for his political difficulties ahead of the August 15 governorship election, saying he should instead defend his performance in office. APC National Secretary, Ajibola Bashiru, made the call while speaking with journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, in response to comments by Adeleke at a campaign rally in Osogbo, where the governor accused political opponents of orchestrating violence in the state and appealed to Tinubu to intervene. Adeleke had alleged that extrajudicial killings were taking place in Osun and urged the President not to turn a blind eye to the situation. “President Bola Tinubu, something is happening in Osun that you have not moved to put an end to. They are killing our people. You are the President; you are the father for all of us. Osun has said they won’t allow rigging,” the governor was quoted as saying. He also warned against any attempt to manipulate the outcome of the election, drawing parallels with the political crisis that engulfed the old Western Region in 1983. “There won’t be rigging in Osun. Remember what happened in 1983. It started in Yorubaland when they cheated Bola Ige and Michael Ajasin. Osun will not agree. We want a free and fair election. President Tinubu, I am passing this message to you. We have endorsed you; why are they still killing us?” Adeleke added. Responding, Bashiru dismissed the governor’s allegations as baseless and urged him to run an issue-based campaign if he believed he deserved a second term. “If Governor Adeleke truly has achievements to present to the people of Osun, he should campaign on them instead of casting aspersions on President Tinubu and leaders of the APC over an election that is still days away,” Bashiru said. The APC scribe said it was surprising that a sitting governor was already raising fears of election rigging nearly two weeks before the poll. “How can a sitting governor be crying about rigging in an election that is still about 11 days away, when in politics even 24 hours is enough to change the dynamics?” he asked. According to Bashiru, Adeleke’s comments reflected anxiety over what he described as the growing popularity of the APC and its governorship candidate, Munirudeen Oyebamiji, popularly known as AMBO. He argued that the governor should instead account for his administration’s performance, alleging that several roads across the state remained in poor condition while the education sector continued to suffer from a shortage of about 30,000 teachers. “If those roads had been fixed, they would have stimulated economic activities across the state. If the shortage of teachers had been addressed, thousands of jobs would have been created while improving the quality of education,” he said. Bashiru also maintained that Adeleke’s endorsement of Tinubu’s second-term bid ahead of the 2027 presidential election would not translate into electoral support for the governor. “The endorsement of President Tinubu is not a guarantee that Governor Adeleke will secure a second term. He must face the electorate and account for his stewardship,” he added. He further claimed that the large crowds attending the party’s campaign rallies across the state had unsettled the governor, prompting what he described as attempts to gain public sympathy through allegations against the ruling party. Similarly, the Osun State chapter of the APC accused Adeleke of fuelling political tension and attempting to shift responsibility for the state’s security challenges to Tinubu and former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola. In a statement signed by the party’s Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, the APC described Adeleke’s allegations as “misplaced, frivolous and unsubstantiated.” “The unsubstantiated allegations of Governor Adeleke, who covers his inadequacy by resorting to dancing when an injection of intellect is needed, against President Tinubu and former Governor Oyetola are misplaced and frivolous. They amount to nothing more than an attempt to justify his imminent defeat in the forthcoming governorship election,” Olabisi said. It also accused the governor of granting questionable amnesty to convicted political thugs and appointing some of them to public offices. “The discerning public deserves to know why, just days before the governorship election, the governor has allegedly been granting questionable amnesty to dangerous political thugs serving various jail terms in correctional centres across the state,” the statement read in part. The APC further argued that Adeleke’s endorsement of Tinubu’s 2027 presidential ambition was voluntary and should not be used as a basis for seeking political concessions. “Why the worry if it is true that Governor Adeleke has performed well? The August 15 governorship election will provide the electorate with the opportunity to assess his claims,” Olabisi added. Osun State will hold its governorship election on August 15, with Governor Adeleke of the Accord Party seeking a second term against the APC candidate, Bola Oyebamiji. The campaign has been marked by accusations and counter-accusations between the two major parties over political violence, security concerns and alleged attempts to influence the electoral process.

Woman Rescued After Plunging Into Lagos Lagoon

A woman was rescued by local fishermen after she reportedly jumped into the Lagos Lagoon from the Idumota-Carter Bridge. The incident occurredWoman Rescued After Plunging Into Lagos Lagoon on Tuesday afternoon, according to a video by X.com user, #ChuksErice. In the video, the woman was seen sitting in a wooden canoe after being pulled from the water, while a fisherman paddles the canoe away from the bridge. The woman appeared disoriented as she sat in the canoe following the rescue. Passers-by who gathered on the bridge could be heard reacting to the incident and questioning what might have prompted the woman to jump into the lagoon. A woman speaking in Yoruba was heard asking, “What were you thinking to that extent?” A man was also heard saying, “I can never kill myself because of thinking,” while another person responded, “Pray to never be in that position.” The circumstances surrounding the incident and the woman’s condition after the rescue had not been disclosed as of the time of filing this report. The video generated reactions on X, with some users expressing concern over the woman’s safety and what may have led to the incident. Reacting to the video, an X user, James JERRY, asked why the woman had been left alone in the canoe after being rescued. “But why is she alone? What if she jumps again? The man is paddling his canoe, who will help out, then?” he wrote. Also reacting, Kingkosec described the rescue as having both positive and negative implications for the woman. “Worst and best thing that can happen to anyone is to be rescued like her. Worst for not fulfilling your wish, best that you will still live again,” he wrote.

Senate Committee Backs Trump’s Former Lawyer for US Attorney General

President Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer, Todd Blanche, moved a step closer to becoming the United States’ top law enforcement official on Tuesday after a Senate committee approved his nomination to lead the Justice Department. The 12-10 vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee was along party lines and came after two Republican senators dropped their opposition to Blanche’s nomination. Blanche’s Senate confirmation had been held up by concerns from senators John Cornyn and Thom Tillis over a $1.8 billion fund for alleged victims of politically motivated prosecution and a tax audit immunity deal with the Republican president. Blanche issued a written order over the weekend scrapping the so-called “anti-weaponization fund” and said the audit immunity agreement with Trump, his two eldest sons and the Trump Organization would only apply “retroactively” to past tax years and not future filings. The full Senate, where Republicans hold a majority, is expected to vote later this week to confirm Blanche as attorney general. He has been serving as acting attorney general since Trump fired Pam Bondi in April. Senate Democrats have been united in their opposition to Blanche amid concerns he has treated the Department of Justice as an extension of the Republican president’s legal team. “Todd Blanche has no business serving as our nation’s chief law enforcement officer,” Senator Dick Durbin, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said before Tuesday’s vote. “The attorney general is supposed to be the people’s lawyer,” Durbin said. “Mr Blanche continues to operate as the president’s personal lawyer, treating the Justice Department like a law firm serving one client — the president.” – ‘Retribution’ campaign – Vice President JD Vance, in a post on X following the committee vote, said Blanche “will continue to serve the American people and the Trump Administration loyally, and he will make a great Attorney General.” Blanche has been closely tied to what Democrats have dubbed a “retribution” campaign by the president against his perceived political enemies and he helped negotiate the extraordinary legal settlement between Trump and the government he controls. The out-of-court settlement stems from Trump’s $10 billion lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) over the illegal disclosure of his tax records by an agency contractor. It proposed immunity from audits for past tax years and a $1.776 billion fund for people who say they were unfairly targeted by the Department of Justice, potentially including Trump supporters convicted over the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol. Federal judges have separately blocked the fund and condemned the tax settlement, which according to US press reports could help the president avoid past liabilities of up to $100 million. Blanche has also come in for criticism from victims of Jeffrey Epstein over his handling of the release of investigative files about the convicted sex offender, a one-time close friend of Trump. Prior to joining the Department of Justice, Blanche represented Trump in his New York trial over alleged “hush money” paid to porn star Stormy Daniels. He was also on the legal defense team in two federal cases brought against Trump by special counsel Jack Smith — for allegedly mishandling classified documents after leaving the White House and for seeking to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. Both cases were dropped after Trump won the 2024 presidential election. AFP

Jigawa Governor Commends Army Over New 262 Tank Battalion

Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi has praised the Nigerian Army for establishing the 262 Tank Battalion in Gumel, describing the development as a significant boost to security in the state and Nigeria’s border communities. This was disclosed by the State Commissioner for Information, Youths, Sports and Culture, Sagir Musa, while briefing journalists on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Namadi on Tuesday at the Government House, Dutse, the Jigawa State capital. According to the commissioner, the council described the development as a significant milestone. “The Council commended the Nigerian Army for the establishment of the 262 Tank Battalion in Jigawa, describing the development as a significant milestone in strengthening security across the state and the nation’s border communities,” Musa said. He explained that the battalion would improve military presence in the northern part of the state. “The Council noted that the establishment of the Battalion will significantly enhance military presence along the state’s northern corridor,” he stated. Musa added that the new deployment would help security agencies respond faster to threats, noting that, “It will improve rapid response to emerging security threats and reinforce the protection of communities bordering the Niger Republic.” The commissioner said the government was optimistic about the impact on crime in border areas. “The Council expressed confidence that the deployment of the Battalion will bolster ongoing efforts to combat cross-border crimes, banditry, smuggling and other security challenges,” Musa noted. He further said it would help restore calm and public trust, adding that, “It will foster greater peace, stability and public confidence in the affected areas.” Musa also acknowledged the sacrifices of security agencies, stating that, “The Council further acknowledged the commitment of the Nigerian Army and other security agencies to safeguarding lives and property and maintaining the territorial integrity of the nation.” He therefore reaffirmed the state government’s support for the military and other security agencies. “The Council reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to supporting the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies through sustained collaboration,” Musa said. The commissioner also stressed that the government would provide the enabling environment for security operations. “We will continue to provide an enabling environment to ensure the effective discharge of their constitutional responsibilities,” he said. According to him, the battalion would also boost economic activities in the area. “The State Government believes that the establishment of the 262 Tank Battalion will not only strengthen the state’s security architecture,” Musa stated. Commenting further on the battalion, the commissioner said it would create a safer environment for business and development. He, however, urged residents to cooperate with security agencies to ensure lasting peace in the state. “It will also create a more secure environment for socio-economic activities, investment and sustainable development across the northern border communities,” the commissioner concluded.

North Will Give 95% of Votes to Tinubu — Uba Sani

Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has expressed confidence that the North will deliver at least 95 per cent of its votes to President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, describing the contest as “already concluded.” Sani made the remarks during the flag-off of the 122-kilometre Kaduna–Birnin Gwari Road project. The governor said Kaduna residents were satisfied with Tinubu’s performance, particularly the Federal Government’s investment in infrastructure across the state. “We have to be happy with what he has done for us and whether we like it or not, Kaduna is the capital of Northern Nigeria. Everyone is proud of Kaduna. “Kaduna’s development is a development for all the states of Northern Nigeria, so we are happy and grateful to the President for recognising that Kaduna is the heart of Northern Nigeria,” he said. Sani said the North would continue to support Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general election. “We will continue to support the President. I have no doubt in my mind that the 2027 election has been concluded, and we are giving President Tinubu at least 95 per cent of the total votes. There is no doubt about that, and I stand to be challenged,” he said. The governor also highlighted ongoing Federal Government road projects in Kaduna State, including the Western Bypass and the planned resumption of work on the Eastern Bypass. “The Western Bypass is ongoing from the Abuja Junction to Kawo Motor Park, and that is also a construction undertaken by the Federal Ministry of Works under the able leadership of Tinubu. “We are resuming the construction of the Eastern Bypass, which is extremely critical for our people. It will resume, according to my conversation with the minister, in the next two weeks, by the grace of God. So all these are things the President is doing for the people of Kaduna State,” he said. Sani maintained that Tinubu had done more for Northern Nigeria than any previous president. “About two weeks ago, I came out boldly and said no president in the history of Nigeria has done what Tinubu did for us here in Northern Nigeria, and I challenge anyone to come up with anything contrary to what I have said. “Tinubu has done a lot. Only now, my brother and friend, Masari, stood here and mentioned most of the projects that Mr President is doing in Northern Nigeria. Again, the minister came up here and confirmed all those projects. “Let me ask a question: Why was it that other leaders were not doing what Tinubu is doing today for Northern Nigeria? Was it that Northern Nigeria was not a priority or that it was not their concern? We thank Tinubu for the love for the North and humanity,” he added.

BREAKING: Tinubu Approves 30%–80% Salary Increase for Armed Forces Personnel

President Bola Tinubu has approved a salary increase ranging from 30 to 80 per cent for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces. The pay package that will benefit approximately 250,000 personnel and take effect from September 1, 2026, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed in a statement signed Tuesday. Onanuga said the graduated structure of the increase scales inversely with rank, with the highest percentage increases going to the most junior personnel. Under the new arrangement, he said officers above the rank of colonel, Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant Generals and Generals, will receive a 30 per cent salary increase. Personnel ranking from colonel down to warrant officer will receive a 50 per cent increase, while those from private to staff sergeant will receive an 80 per cent increase. The pay package will raise the annual salary bill for the armed forces from N660 billion to N924 billion, an increase of N264 billion. The President linked the pay rise directly to the sacrifices personnel continue to make in the fight against banditry, kidnapping and terrorism across parts of the country. He said, “The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation.” Tinubu said troop welfare and military modernisation would remain a standing priority of his administration. “Our administration will continue to prioritise troop welfare and modernise the armed forces by providing the weapons and technological tools needed to discharge their duties,” he said. Tinubu tied the salary increase to his broader philosophy on national security saying, “Our administration believes that no nation can achieve greatness without security. We therefore remain resolute in mobilising all military and law enforcement assets to eliminate security threats and protect the lives and property of all Nigerians,” he said. “I urge our servicemen to take our gesture as a sign of our deep appreciation of the services they render to our fatherland. “Together we shall prevail over the enemies intent on destroying the fabric of our nation,” the President said.

Oloolu Festival: TikToker Breaks Silence Over Alleged Masquerade Filming

The female TikTok content creator at the centre of the controversy surrounding the annual Oloolu Masquerade Festival in Ibadan, Oyo State, has denied reports that she filmed the sacred Oloolu masquerade, insisting that she neither recorded the revered traditional figure nor died as widely speculated on social media. Speaking via telephone during an interview on Lagelu FM’s Ibi Aye N Lo programme hosted by Adesoye Omotosho on Monday, the woman, identified as Wasilat, also dismissed rumours of her death. “I am not dead. I did not capture the Oloolu masquerade. May I not be implicated; I did not record Oloolu. “What happened that day, last Thursday, around the Oremeji axis, I don’t know what prompted me to go to our shop because I was at home. “When I got to the shop, I didn’t even open it. I just stayed in front of the shop because we had packed up from that area. “When I saw people passing, I saw an Amotekun vehicle passing. Oloolu did not even pass through that route. “So I filmed it and posted it on social media. Everyone in the TikTok comment section asked me to delete it. The following day, while I was at the shop, they came to meet me there. “I do not know why the eyewitnesses on Thursday did not defend me. I don’t know who came up with that agenda, but I know God will judge,” she said. The incident sparked widespread reactions after videos surfaced online showing her undergoing traditional cleansing rites at the Oloolu compound. Speaking with PUNCH Online on Monday, the spokesperson to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Chief Adeola Oloko, said the woman did not record the sacred Oloolu masquerade itself but mistakenly captured Alawo Oloolu, a figure associated with the Oloolu tradition. “She did not capture Oloolu; she mistook it for Alawo. We contacted the Mogaji of the Oloolu compound, and he confirmed that a woman who mistook Alawo of Oloolu for the real Oloolu masquerade captured it on the street,” Oloko said. He added that after uploading the footage, the woman reportedly developed unusual health challenges, prompting her family to seek intervention from the traditional custodians. “After posting it, she realised the blood in her body began to dry. So her family reached out to the Oloolu people immediately, and they attended to her in accordance with the tradition of the land. “We have told people to obey simple instructions; women are not supposed to see Oloolu, but out of curiosity, she disobeyed,” he said. Oloko, however, said he could not verify claims circulating on social media that the woman disguised herself as a man to secretly record the procession. “I cannot confirm she disguised herself as a man. Those are accounts on social media. But she took the footage or photo on the street,” he added. Videos circulating online showed what appeared to be a public traditional cleansing ceremony, with the content creator surrounded by traditional worshippers. She was seen with her head shaved, dressed in red garments and participating in rituals, while giant African snails and a ram were reportedly presented as part of the prescribed rites. Another video also showed what appeared to be a goat slaughtered during the ceremony, while social media users claimed her mother appealed to the traditional custodians for mercy on her behalf. Meanwhile, Ibadan-based content creator, Ayo Adams, who visited the Oloolu compound, said officials confirmed the woman was alive and recovering. The annual Oloolu Festival attracts traditional rulers, worshippers, cultural enthusiasts and visitors from across Yorubaland. The festival features prayers, rituals, sacrifices, drumming, dancing and processions aimed at honouring ancestors while seeking peace, protection, prosperity and communal wellbeing. PUNCH Online had also reported that the palace of the Olubadan of Ibadanland released the movement schedule for the 2026 Oloolu Masquerade Festival, detailing the communities the masquerade visited between July 28 and July 30.
