BREAKING: America’s Russell Shatters Tobi Amusan’s World Record

Olympic champion Masai Russell has shattered Nigerian hurdler Tobi Amusan’s world record in the women’s 100m hurdles, bringing an end to Amusan’s four-year reign as the event’s record holder. Russell ran a stunning 12.09 seconds at the Zurich Diamond League on Thursday, taking three hundredths of a second off Amusan’s previous world record of 12.12 seconds. The American finished ahead of Amusan, who placed second in 12.23 seconds. Before Russell’s record-breaking performance, Amusan had held the world record with a time of 12.12 seconds, which she ran in the semi-finals of the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, USA. The Nigerian went on to win the final in a time of 12.06 seconds, but the winning time didn’t stand as a world record over exccessive tailwind. Russell had come close to breaking the record earlier this year when she ran 12.14 seconds at the Xiamen Diamond League in May, making her the second-fastest woman ever in the event at the time. The 12.09 run in Zurich now sees Russell become the first woman to go faster than Amusan’s mark.

Herrera Reveals Why He Chose to Play for Free at Boyhood Club

Former Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has described his return to boyhood club Real Zaragoza as a dream come true, revealing that he is playing for free in a bid to help the Spanish side restore its fortunes. The 37-year-old midfielder has returned to Zaragoza after 15 years away, joining on a free transfer from Boca Juniors. Herrera began his professional career at Zaragoza before going on to play for Athletic Club, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Boca Juniors. Despite enjoying a successful career that included the Europa League, FA Cup and several league titles, Herrera says coming home is one of the most meaningful moves he has ever made. “This is probably the last dream that I wanted to make come true,” Herrera told BBC Sport on Thursday. “To come back home, to the place where I grew up, that allowed me to be professional – not only in football, also as a human being.” Zaragoza are currently going through one of the most difficult periods in their history. The club were relegated from La Liga in 2013 and, after years of struggling in the second division, have now fallen into Spain’s third tier. Herrera admits it has been painful to watch the club’s decline but says he wants to concentrate on helping them move forward. “It has been so sad, of course, for all us Zaragozistas,” he said. “Real Zaragoza belong to Europe, they belong to compete for trophies, to be fighting with the biggest clubs in Spain and in Europe.” “I want to put my quality, my experience and my passion to try to help my team to come back where I think we belong.” The midfielder has also decided to donate his salary to the Real Zaragoza Foundation rather than take a wage from the club. “I don’t need a contract. I have a very successful career. I have taken care of my money,” Herrera said. “I can give this present to myself. To put that shirt on… for free because I wanted to help my club, my team, my city.” Herrera said the decision was motivated by his deep connection with Zaragoza and his desire to give something back to the club that helped shape him. “It’s something that I wanted to do. It’s something that I can do and it’s something that makes me feel so proud to be able to be here just to help.” “I’m not thinking about money or contracts. I feel privileged to be able to do that.” Herrera was a passionate Zaragoza supporter before becoming a first-team player. His father, Pedro, also played for the club and later served as its general manager. The midfielder’s earliest football memories include watching Zaragoza defeat Arsenal in the 1995 Cup Winners’ Cup final — a competition he later won himself during his career. Now he hopes his experience can help Zaragoza return to the level he believes the club deserves. Rather than looking back at the years of decline, Herrera wants the club to focus on rebuilding. “Since the first day I came, I don’t want to talk too much about the past,” he said. “We have been talking too much about what we have done wrong.” “Let’s stop crying about what happened in the past. Let’s build on the future. Let’s come every day to training with a smile.” For Herrera, returning to Zaragoza is about more than ending his playing career. It is an opportunity to repay the club that gave him his first chance and helps restore its place in Spanish football. “In Spain, we say closing the circle,” he said.

EPL: Delap Joins Nottingham Forest in £50m Transfer Deal

Liam Delap has officially joined Nottingham Forest in a club-record £50 million transfer from Chelsea, putting pen to paper on a five-year deal with the City Ground outfit. The 23-year-old striker joins Forest after just one season at Stamford Bridge, where he scored only one Premier League goal. Delap is hoping the move will revive his career and help him rediscover the form he showed during his breakthrough Premier League season with Ipswich in 2024-25. He scored 12 league goals for Ipswich that campaign, despite playing for a side that won just four games and was relegated. His performances attracted Chelsea, who signed him for around £30m. A year later, Chelsea have reportedly made a £20m profit by selling him to Forest for £50m. Delap’s physical strength, pace and ability to carry the ball were among the qualities that made him so effective at Ipswich. He recorded 26 shot-ending carries that season — the most by any Premier League striker. Now at Forest, Delap will work under manager Oliver Glasner, who he believes can help him take the next step in his development. As reported by BBC Sport on Thursday, reacting to the transfer, Delap was quoted as saying, “This is a massive club with a big history. “I spoke to the manager and I like his way. I think he can be the one to really help me develop and make that next step.” Forest will hope Delap can reproduce the form that made him one of the Premier League’s most promising young strikers and justify the club-record investment.

Bruno Fernandes Named 2026 PFA Players’ Player of the Year

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has been crowned the 2026 Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Players’ Player of the Year. The award was presented at the 53rd annual PFA Awards ceremony at the Manchester Opera House in Manchester, United Kingdom, on Tuesday. The Portuguese midfielder received the prestigious honour after being voted the best player of the 2025/26 season by his fellow professionals. The PFA announced the award on Tuesday, with Fernandes beating five other nominees in the men’s category. The nominees were Manchester City duo Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki, as well as Arsenal trio Declan Rice, David Raya and Gabriel Magalhães. The award caps a remarkable individual campaign for Fernandes, who played a key role in Manchester United’s third-place finish in the Premier League and their return to the UEFA Champions League. Fernandes also enjoyed a record-breaking season, providing 21 assists in the Premier League. He had earlier been named the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year and the Premier League’s Player of the Season. Haaland entered the contest after winning the Premier League Golden Boot for the third time, scoring 27 goals in 35 league appearances for Manchester City. His City teammate Cherki was also recognised after an impressive first season in English football. Arsenal had three representatives in the final six following their title-winning campaign, with Rice, Raya and Gabriel all making the shortlist. The PFA Players’ Player of the Year is particularly significant because fellow players, rather than fans, journalists, or a judging panel, determine the winner. Fernandes’ triumph continues a strong run of individual recognition for the Manchester United captain, who has established himself as one of the club’s most influential players since joining the side in January 2020.

Olise Scores, Assists as Bayern Munich Defeat Dortmund 2-1 to Win Super Cup

Michael Olise scored and set up a goal as Bayern Munich secured a 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund to lift the German Super Cup on Saturday. The France international was Bayern’s standout attacking player, causing problems down the right flank throughout the match after starring for France at the World Cup. Olise played a key role in Bayern’s opening goal in the 28th minute. After being brought down near the edge of the penalty area, the ball fell to Nathaniel Brown, who calmly finished to give the visitors the lead. Bayern doubled their advantage shortly before half-time when Olise capitalised on a poor backpass from Jobe Bellingham. He raced clear of the Dortmund defence before keeping his composure to beat the advancing goalkeeper. Dortmund improved after the break and put Bayern under sustained pressure, but Vincent Kompany’s side defended well to maintain their advantage. The hosts eventually pulled a goal back with 15 minutes remaining when former Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Fabio Silva converted a Daniel Svensson cross following good work from debutant Giannis Konstantelias. Silva had another opportunity late in the game but headed straight at Manuel Neuer. Dortmund were reduced to 10 men in the final minute when Ramy Bensebaini was shown a straight red card for a late challenge on Bayern debutant Ismael Saibari. The hosts still had a chance to force an equaliser in stoppage time, but Maximilian Beier failed to beat Neuer after finding himself one-on-one with the Bayern goalkeeper. The victory secured Bayern’s 12th German Super Cup title and their second consecutive triumph since the competition was renamed in honour of club legend Franz Beckenbauer in 2025. The result also gave Bayern a winning start to the new season, although they were made to work hard by a Dortmund side beginning a new campaign with a revamped squad.

Osimhen Moves Up to Third on Galatasaray’s All-Time Foreign Goalscorers’ List

Victor Osimhen has risen to third on Galatasaray’s all-time foreign goalscorers’ chart following another outstanding display for the Turkish champions. The Nigeria international scored twice as Galatasaray defeated Erzurum FK 4-0 on Friday night, taking his tally for the club to 62 goals in 76 appearances. According to Turkish sports outlet, A Spor, on X on Friday, Osimhen’s brace saw him overtake former Czech Republic international Milan Baros, who scored 61 goals during his spell with the Istanbul giants. The 27-year-old has also registered 16 assists since joining Galatasaray. Only two players now stand ahead of Osimhen on the club’s foreign scorers list. Argentine striker Mauro Icardi leads with 77 goals, while Romanian legend Gheorghe Hagi is second with 72. Osimhen is also enjoying a remarkable start to the new Süper Lig season. His two goals against Erzurum FK took his tally to at least four goals across Galatasaray’s opening two league matches, making him the first player since Brazilian striker Mario Jardel in the 2000/01 season to achieve the feat. The latest milestone further highlights Osimhen’s growing importance at Galatasaray, where he has already established himself among the club’s most prolific foreign scorers.

La Liga: Rodri to Miss Elche Opener, Barcelona Coach Confirms

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has confirmed that new signing Rodri will miss the Spanish champions’ La Liga opening fixture against Elche on Sunday. The former Manchester City midfielder may, however, be able to take part in their second match, against Athletic Bilbao, on Thursday. “He’s very concentrated, focused, our plan is that he will arrive on Monday with the team,” Flick told reporters on Saturday. “This is the plan. He’s a fantastic player, a leader, and his personality is very great.” Barca signed the Spanish World Cup winner for a fee which could rise to 76.5 million euros ($89 million) to bolster their midfield. However after Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres departed, the club are still looking for a striker in the transfer market. Flick did not reveal who would start up front at Elche but praised the pre-season form of Egyptian youngster Hamza Abdelkarim, after the 18-year-old notched four goals in friendlies. “Hamza is having a really great pre-season,” said Flick. “He’s a number nine, he’s young, and he has a lot of potential, and also he scored goals. This is the important thing when you’re playing in this position, and he made a great job.” New arrivals Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, both wingers, can also play through the middle as false nines along with Raphinha and Dani Olmo. Flick said full-back Joao Cancelo, signed this week, was available for Barcelona’s trip to the Martinez Valero stadium. “He’s ready to play. He has unbelievable technique and a lot of passion,” added Flick. AFP

La Liga: Yamal a very Good Player, but I Won’t Sign Him — Mourinho

Real Madrid coach José Mourinho has acknowledged Lamine Yamal’s exceptional talent but dismissed any possibility of bringing the Barcelona winger to the club. Asked about Yamal, Mourinho said the youngster is “a very good player” but made it clear that he would not pursue a move for him. Fabrizio Romano quoted the Portuguese on X on Thursday as saying: “I won’t sign him. We already have the best players.”Yamal has established himself as one of the most exciting young talents in world football, attracting widespread praise for his ability and performances despite his young age. However, Mourinho’s comments underline his confidence in the players already available to him. For the Portuguese coach, there appears to be no need to look elsewhere when he believes his current squad already has the quality required to compete at the highest level. Speaking about Diomande’s signing, Mourinho revealed that although he did not specifically request the signing of Yan Diomande, he was keen to have the young winger at his club.“No, I did not ask, but I wanted him. He’s a great player who can play on both sides,” he said. Mourinho’s comments highlight his admiration for Diomande’s versatility and attacking qualities. The ability to operate on either flank makes the player an attractive option for a coach looking for flexibility in his attacking setup. Madrid will play their opening league fixture away to Espanyol on Saturday, August 22, at the RCDE Stadium

EPL: Man United Near £60m-Plus Deal for Brighton Midfielder Baleba

Manchester United are reportedly nearing an agreement to sign Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba as the club steps up efforts to bolster its midfield ahead of the new season. United attempted to sign the Cameroon international last summer but were put off by Brighton’s valuation, which was in excess of £100 million. However, Baleba’s price has reduced significantly and, after failing in their pursuit of Matheus Fernandes earlier this summer, United have decided to revisit the midfielder. As reported by BBC Sport on Wednesday, the Red Devils have submitted an initial £60 million offer, which remains below Brighton’s valuation, but negotiations are continuing. United have already strengthened their midfield this summer with the arrivals of Andrey Santos from Chelsea for £48 million and Youri Tielemans, who joined from Aston Villa for £35 million in July. Mason Mount impressed alongside Santos during United’s first three pre-season games but has since been struggling with a foot problem suffered against Paris Saint-Germain in Gothenburg on 8 August. Baleba, meanwhile, is expected to be sidelined for another two to three weeks after suffering an ankle injury during a pre-season training camp in Austria. Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler’s squad are due to fly to Norway on Wednesday ahead of Thursday’s UEFA Conference League play-off first-leg match against Tromso. Baleba made 35 appearances for Brighton last season, receiving seven yellow cards while operating primarily as a defensive midfielder. The move makes sense for United, who tried to sign Baleba 12 months ago and are therefore fully aware of his qualities. The Cameroon international is the type of box-to-box midfielder United lack despite the arrivals of Santos and Tielemans. Baleba also wants to make the move, while the eventual fee is expected to be significantly lower than the £100 million Brighton demanded previously. However, the reduction in his valuation is partly due to the underwhelming form he showed last season. Baleba made 31 Premier League starts and three substitute appearances in 2024-25, compared with 23 starts and eight substitute appearances in 2025-26. The figures highlight a decline in his form and importance to Hurzeler during a campaign in which Brighton secured European football for only the second time in their history. There was speculation that Baleba’s head had been turned by United’s interest, but Brighton sources last season said they did not believe that was the case. With the transfer deadline approaching, United have now made their move. Manager Michael Carrick will hope the club can secure the 2024-25 version of Baleba as they look to add further strength and energy to their midfield.
