Osimhen’s Brace Knocks Mourinho’s Fenerbahce Out Of Turkish Cup

Victor Osimhen delivered a stunning performance on Wednesday as his brace secured Galatasaray a 2-1 victory over Fenerbahce in the final stage of the Turkish Cup, eliminating José Mourinho’s side from the competition. Osimhen opened the scoring in the 10th minute, putting Galatasaray ahead with a well-taken shot from the edge of the box. The Nigerian striker then doubled his tally in the 27th minute from the penalty spot, giving his team a comfortable 2-0 lead before halftime. Fenerbahce managed to pull one back just before the break, with Sebastian Szymański finding the net in first-half stoppage time (45+1’), but it was not enough to turn the tide. Despite late attempts to equalize, including substitutions involving Mert Yandaş and Kerem Demirbay in the 90+2 minute, Mourinho’s side fell short as Galatasaray held on for the win.

Real Madrid Making Progress On Alexander-Arnold Transfer – Reports

Trent Alexander-Arnold is closing in on a move to Real Madrid when his Liverpool contract expires at the end of the season, according to reports on Tuesday. The defender has long been linked with a move to the Bernabeu on a free transfer and talks between the 26-year-old and the Spanish giants are understood to be making progress. The England international, who came through the youth ranks at Liverpool and has been at the Premier League club for more than two decades, has been able to discuss terms with overseas clubs since January. Alexander-Arnold made his Liverpool debut as an 18-year-old in 2016. The right-back has won the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup and Club World Cup with his boyhood club and is on course to add a second league crown this season, with Arne Slot’s side currently 12 points clear at the top of the table. Alexander-Arnold is one of three key Liverpool players out of contract at the end of the season, with the futures of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk still unclear. Alexander-Arnold is currently out of action with an ankle injury and missed Liverpool’s defeat to Newcastle in the League Cup final earlier this month. Liverpool have declined to comment on the reports. AFP

Chris Wood Injured As New Zealand Qualify For World Cup

New Zealand reached the World Cup for only the third time with a 3-0 win over New Caledonia on Monday but lost in-form Nottingham Forest striker Chris Wood to injury. The All Whites join already qualified Japan and co-hosts the United States, Canada and Mexico at next year’s finals thanks to three second-half goals. But the victory in Auckland in the final of Oceania qualifying came at a cost, with skipper Wood suffering what appeared to be a hip injury. Soon after half time at Eden Park, Wood hurt himself swivelling for a shot and required treatment before hobbling off in the 54th minute. “It’s not great for us losing our captain and our goalscorer. It was a difficult thing for the team but they came through so well,” said New Zealand’s English coach Darren Bazeley. The hosts looked out of ideas after dominating the first half, but then up popped veteran defender Michael Boxall on 61 minutes to head home from a corner with his first goal for his country. Five minutes later Wood’s replacement Kosta Barbarouses chipped the ball over advancing New Caledonia goalkeeper Rocky Nyikeine. Substitute Eli Just put gloss on the scoreline from close range with 10 minutes left. New Caledonia’s unlikely World Cup hopes are not over and they will go into an intercontinental playoff. Next year’s World Cup has been expanded to 48 teams, meaning direct entry for the first time for the team that won the qualifying competition in Oceania. The region’s top side previously had to go through an intercontinental playoff, with New Zealand falling at the final hurdle to Mexico, Costa Rica and Peru in recent editions. New Zealand have been to the World Cup twice before, in 1982 and 2010, but are yet to win at the competition in six matches. “Once the World Cup expanded we expected this of ourselves,” said Boxall. “It’s not about getting there, it’s about what we do when we get there.” Facing a side ranked 152 in the world, 63 places below them, hosts New Zealand immediately went on the front foot. New Caledonia, a French Pacific territory of about 300,000 people which has never been to the World Cup, twice cleared off the line in quick succession after 20 minutes. Wood, who is in the form of his life at Forest with 18 goals in the Premier League this season, had a chance in the 32nd minute but Nyikeine saved comfortably. The 33-year-old Wood then headed over the bar from a corner and at the half-time whistle, with the game unexpectedly level, the New Caledonia players mobbed Nyikeine. Bazeley had seen enough and made two changes at the break, bringing on winger Just and defender Francis de Vries. Despite losing talisman Wood, New Zealand’s pressure eventually paid off against a rapidly tiring New Caledonia to put the All Whites into the World Cup. AFP

Burglars Raid Newcastle Striker Isak’s Home, Steal Car, £68,000 Cash, Jewellery

A gang of burglars raided the home of Newcastle United striker, Alexander Isak, carting away his car, cash, and jewellery worth £68,000 ($87,000), a court heard on Wednesday, according to multiple reports in England. The Swedish international was away from his Northumberland residence when the break-in occurred last April, Newcastle Crown Court was told. Prosecutors revealed that the gang had earlier stolen jewellery and designer items worth over £1 million from a businesswoman and another £100,000 worth of valuables from a different victim in the days leading up to Isak’s burglary. Three members of the gang, all from the same family and residing in Italy, have admitted conspiracy to commit burglary. However, a fourth suspect, Valentino Nikolov, 32, has denied the charges. Prosecuting counsel Dan Cordey told the court that Isak left his house between 4 pm and 10pm on April 4 and returned to discover his home had been ransacked. The burglars reportedly gained entry through a glass door, breaking into the footballer’s TV room before conducting a thorough search. “They took between £5,000 and £10,000 in cash, jewellery worth around £68,000, and his Audi vehicle, which was later found abandoned,” Cordey told the jury. The prosecution described the burglars as a “professional group of travelling criminals” consisting of one woman and three men, all related. “Two men and one woman have pleaded guilty to their involvement,” Cordey added, identifying the remaining suspect as Nikolov, who is representing himself in court and requires an Italian interpreter. The gang reportedly entered the UK via a ferry from Calais to Dover last March, using a motorhome as their base of operations. Nikolov’s brother, Giacomo Nikolov, 28, his sister, Jela Jovanovic, 43, and her son, Charlie Jovanovic, 23, have all pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit burglary. Meanwhile, Isak has been in sensational form for Newcastle this season, netting 22 goals across all competitions for Eddie Howe’s side, who are set to face Liverpool in the League Cup final at Wembley on March 16. Transfers: Villa Close In On Rashford Loan, West Ham Push For Ferguson

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford is set to join Aston Villa on loan in a deal that includes a potential permanent transfer, according to sports journalist Fabrizio Romano. In a post shared on Sunday via X, Romano reported that Villa will cover over 70per cent of Rashford’s salary as part of the agreement, with a £40 million buy option included in the deal. The England international is expected to undergo a medical today before finalising the move. Romano wrote: “Marcus Rashford to Aston Villa, here we go. Agreement in place on a loan deal with over 70% of his salary covered by Villa. A buy option clause worth £40m is also included in the contract, with a potential three-and-a-half-year deal to follow. Medical booked today.” Meanwhile, West Ham United are making progress in negotiations to sign Brighton striker Evan Ferguson on a straight loan deal until June. Talks are ongoing, with final details yet to be agreed upon with the player’s representatives. Elsewhere, Manchester United and Arsenal are in contact with Mathys Tel’s representatives as the Bayern Munich forward considers his future. With just 36 hours remaining in the transfer window, Tel still has a strong chance of leaving the German club, with United pushing for a loan move and Arsenal making another approach. In Serie A, Chelsea midfielder Cesare Casadei has completed a permanent move to Torino in a €15 million deal, while Nicolò Zaniolo has joined Fiorentina from Galatasaray after his loan spell at Atalanta was terminated. Flamengo also approached Arsenal in an attempt to sign Jorginho immediately, but the Gunners rejected the request. The Brazilian club is now working on securing the midfielder on a free transfer for next season. Meanwhile, Eintracht Frankfurt have activated a €16 million buy option for Belgian defender Arthur Theate, who has been in impressive form and is attracting interest from several clubs ahead of the summer window. With the deadline fast approaching, clubs across Europe are racing to finalise deals before the window shuts. Punch

Ex-Milan Boss Paulo Fonseca Becomes New Lyon Coach

Former AC Milan coach Paulo Fonseca was appointed head coach of Ligue 1 side Lyon on Friday, following the departure of Pierre Sage. The 51-year-old former Portugal international signed a two-and-a-half- year contract and has been tasked with guiding Lyon, who are currently sixth in the table, to Champions League qualification. Fonseca watched from the stands on Thursday alongside Lyon’s American owner John Textor as Lyon secured their place in the last 16 of the Europa League with a 1-1 draw against Bulgaria’s Ludogorets. Sage was an unknown quantity when he was appointed in November 2023 to take over a team that was rooted to the bottom of the French top flight. He revived Lyon’s fortunes, guiding them to European qualification and a French Cup final, which they lost to Paris Saint-Germain. However, he paid the price for a run of five games without a win this month, including a French Cup exit at the hands of fifth-division side Bourgoin-Jallieu. Fonseca, who was sacked by AC Milan in late December, has experience of Ligue 1 after impressing during two years in charge at Lille. However, he faces a battle to win over the Lyon fans who had grown fond of Sage and were angered by his sacking. AFP

EPL: Liverpool Rout Ipswich 4-1 As Arsenal Beat Wolves

Cody Gakpo struck twice as Premier League leaders Liverpool thrashed Ipswich 4-1 to maintain their six-point lead over Arsenal, who survived Myles Lewis-Skelly’s controversial red card to snatch a 1-0 win at Wolves on Saturday. Arne Slot’s side cruised to their second successive league victory thanks to a first-half goal-spree at Anfield. Dominik Szoboszlai’s 11th-minute opener fizzed past Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton from Ibrahima Konate’s assist. Mohamed Salah doubled Liverpool’s advantage in the 35th minute with a fierce strike for his 23rd goal in all competitions this term. It was also the Egypt forward’s 100th Premier League goal at Anfield. Gakpo killed off Ipswich before half-time when he bundled home after Walton parried Szoboszlai’s shot in the 44th minute. The Dutch forward netted again in the 66th minute, heading past Walton from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross. Jacob Greaves’ stoppage-time diving header was little consolation for third-bottom Ipswich, who have conceded 10 goals in their last two league games. Liverpool’s 16th win from 22 league games this season keeps them on course for a first English title since 2020. The quadruple-chasing Reds have a game in hand on second-placed Arsenal, who left it late before keeping the pressure on the leaders. Arsenal, without ill captain Martin Odegaard, had Lewis-Skelly contentiously sent off for tripping Matt Doherty to stop a Wolves counter-attack in the 43rd minute. It was a cynical challenge, but Arsenal were furious, protesting that the tackle was too far from goal to warrant a red card. The Premier League Match Centre confirmed on social media that the 18-year-old defender was sent off for “serious foul play”. But Wolves were also reduced t0 10 men in the 70th minute when Joao Gomes earned a second booking for a foul on Jurrien Timber. And Italy defender Riccardo Calafiori won it for Arsenal in the 74th minute with a half-volley that went in off the far post. – Moyes celebrates milestone – Dango Ouattara hit a hat-trick as Bournemouth extended their club-record unbeaten run to dent Nottingham Forest’s top four charge with a 5-0 demolition at the Vitality Stadium. Andoni Iraola’s side are undefeated in their last 11 league games and up to sixth place after ending third-placed Forest’s own impressive run of eight top-flight matches without losing. Justin Kluivert struck for Bournemouth in the ninth minute for his sixth goal in his last four games. Ouattara increased Bournemouth’s lead in the 55th minute when he nodded in from Kluivert’s cross. The Burkina Faso winger bagged his second six minutes later and completed a memorable treble three minutes from full-time. There was still time for Antoine Semenyo to net in the final minutes as Bournemouth followed last weekend’s superb 4-1 win at Newcastle with their biggest victory this season. Alexander Isak starred as Newcastle moved into fourth place with a 3-1 win at bottom-of-the-table Southampton. Jan Bednarek put Southampton ahead in the 10th minute with a powerful header from James Bree’s cross. But Isak levelled from the penalty spot in the 26th minute after Joe Aribo fouled the in-form striker. Isak made it 11 goals from his last eight games, and 19 for the season when he finished a flowing move by converting Jacob Murphy’s 30th-minute pass. Anthony Gordon’s pass sent Sandro Tonali sprinting clear to bag Newcastle’s third goal in the 51st minute. Everton boss David Moyes celebrated becoming the third manager to reach 700 Premier League games with a 1-0 win at Brighton. Only Arsene Wenger at Arsenal and Alex Ferguson at Manchester United have managed more Premier League matches than Moyes, whose team earned their second consecutive victory to climb seven points clear of the relegation zone. Brighton defender Joel Veltman’s handball conceded a 42nd-minute penalty that Iliman Ndiaye slotted home. Troubled champions Manchester City host top-four rivals Chelsea in Saturday’s late game, with Pep Guardiola’s side looking for a win that would lift them into fourth place. AFP
