Police Deny Reports Of Attack In Wike’s Residence And Riots In Rivers

Police Deny Reports Of Attack In Wike’s Residence And Riots In Rivers. The Rivers State Police Command has said online reports of riots in parts of the state and an attack on the residence of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, are false. Recall that the social media was awash with reports that some aggrieved persons had set fire to the residents of the former Rivers State Governor along Ada George in Port Harcourt on Sunday following the political crisis in the state. But the spokesperson of the State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Monday, described it as a false alarm by mischief makers. Iringe-Koko said there is neither any violence nor an an act of arson on the residents of the FCT Minister, pointing out that the baseless report is aimed at igniting unrest and fear among law-abiding citizens and residents of the state. While warning those behind such false reports to resist forthwith, the state Police image maker said the weight of the law will catch up with them if they don’t need the advice. The statement reads, “The attention of the Rivers State Police Command has been drawn to a misleading and malicious report circulating on various online media platforms, falsely claiming that riots have erupted in Rivers State, leading to the burning of the residence of the former Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, along with other acts of violence. “The Command categorically states that this report is entirely false, baseless, and a deliberate attempt by mischief makers to incite unrest and spread fear among law-abiding residents. “There is no record of any such incident, and normalcy prevails across the state. The general public is urged to disregard these unfounded claims, which are clearly intended to cause panic and destabilize the relative peace and security enjoyed by the good people of Rivers State. “Furthermore, the Police Command sternly warns those responsible for spreading such incendiary falsehoods to desist from engaging in activities capable of inciting public disorder. “The full weight of the law will be brought to bear on individuals or groups found guilty of spreading misinformation or attempting to disrupt the peace in any form.” It continued, “The Rivers State Police Command remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents. “We urge members of the public to rely on credible sources for information and to report any suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies. Citizens should remain calm and go about their lawful activities without fear.” Punch

Fuel Subsidy Removal: Senate Leader Defends Tinubu, Blames Cabal

The Leader of the Senate, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, has explained the challenges faced by President Bola Tinubu in the first 18 months of his administration, particularly in relation to the removal of the fuel subsidy. Bamidele, the Senator representing Ekiti Central in the Senate, said the key beneficiaries of the subsidy, rather than ordinary citizens, were the ones who made governance difficult for the president. The lawmaker stated this in a statement issued by his Directorate of Media and Public Affairs on Monday. He said that the individuals who had access to the subsidy, mostly members of a powerful cabal, were responsible for undermining the administration. Bamidele stressed that the removal of the subsidy was a necessary move in the public interest and that it was in line with an agreement made by the 9th National Assembly. “I am convinced that the president did the right thing by removing the fuel subsidy, for which the 9th National Assembly made provision till May 2023. However, the people who made governance difficult for President Tinubu were those benefiting from fuel subsidies. “It was not common men and women of this country who were benefiting from the fuel subsidy. It was not. It was members of the cabal who had access to the fuel subsidy. They are the ones taking away this privilege all in the name and on behalf of the masses. And the masses did not benefit from it. “I was part of the 9th National Assembly. At that time, we had agreed with the executive arm that the fuel subsidy should be removed because it was no longer in the overriding interest of the country. The Tinubu administration acted based on the policy direction the National Assembly approved before his inauguration on May 29, 2023,” the senate leader noted. Bamidele further clarified that the National Assembly had only allocated funds for the subsidy until May 2023, meaning that the subsidy would have ended shortly after President Tinubu’s inauguration, regardless of his announcement. He argued that retaining the subsidy would have plunged the country into a fiscal crisis, as the funds could not be sustained, and would have led to cuts in crucial transfers to sub-national governments. “In the 2023 budget, the National Assembly only made provision for fuel subsidy till May 2023. Whether President Tinubu was removed at his inauguration or not, there was no longer funding for subsidy because we did not make provision for it beyond May 2023. “He did not say he was going to remove the fuel subsidy. He simply said that the fuel subsidy was gone simply because the National Assembly only made provision for it till May 2023. Even if he did not say it, the fuel subsidy would have gone in two days after his inauguration.” The Senate leader expressed confidence that the 2025 Appropriation Act would address the country’s socio-economic challenges, not just at the national level but also at the state and local levels. He emphasised that although the increased statutory transfers to sub-national governments were often overlooked, they were crucial for driving development across Nigeria. He also pointed out that the Federal Government had shifted its budgetary focus, allocating less to recurrent expenditure and more to capital expenditure. This, he said, represented a major change from past practices and a move towards more sustainable spending. “What is important is to get the focus of the budget at the national level and sub-national levels right. “What is the focus of the 2025 budget being passed? Does it address the welfare of the people? Does it prioritise the critical sector of the economy, including education? What is the scale of attention being paid to health and social welfare? What is the percentage of the budget going to agriculture? “Compared to the previous fiscal years, the federal government is devoting less to recurrent expenditure while more is being devoted to capital expenditure. That is a major shift from what had been in practice since the return to democracy. It means we are spending less on consumables,” he stated. Bamidele also praised President Tinubu’s decision not to retrench public workers despite the economic challenges facing the country. He explained that such a decision would exacerbate the problems the country was already facing, particularly with regard to the security situation, which had disrupted agricultural activities. He expressed optimism that the security situation was improving and that, over time, conditions would get better, allowing displaced persons to return home and farmers to resume their activities. The Senate leader concluded by stating that the steps taken by the government were necessary to stabilise the economy and set the country on a path of recovery, even though challenges remained. He urged the public to focus on the broader picture of national and sub-national development and the long-term benefits of the administration’s policies. The leader added, “Retrenching workers is not an option before this administration because it will cause more problems. Look at our situation. *We are confronted with grave security challenges that nearly erode the gains of the administration, especially in the area of agriculture. This is mainly because people could no longer go to farms. It was quite a bad situation, but we are gradually coming out of it. “While it is not yet Uhuru, the security situation is fast improving across the federation today. Some of the IDPs are gradually relocating to their base. Farmers are too steadily returning to their farms. Altogether, things are improving. I am sure that things will be different very soon.” Punch

Tinubu’s Reforms Will Earn Him Favourable Place In History – Minister

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu will be judged favourably by history, citing his commitment to Nigeria’s progress and governance with a sense of divine responsibility Speaking at the Ministerial Press Briefing Session in Abuja on Thursday, Idris stated that Tinubu’s ongoing reforms, though demanding, are necessary to reposition the country for long-term stability and development. “We have crossed the Rubicon, and the pains are gradually easing as the positive impact of these reforms begins to manifest. Already, we are witnessing a reduction in food prices, stability in exchange rates, and a gradual decline in petroleum product costs—clear indicators that the policies are yielding results,” Idris said. He acknowledged that transformative reforms are often met with resistance due to their immediate hardships but stressed that they are essential for national progress. “Across the world, history has shown that meaningful reforms are never easy; they require sacrifice, resilience, and a commitment to long-term progress. The initial difficulties that accompany these changes are a necessary price for a more stable and prosperous future,” the minister added. While appreciating Nigerians for their patience and support, Idris urged religious leaders to take advantage of the sacred seasons of Ramadan and Lent to pray for the country’s peace, security, and development. “I want to appeal to our Muslim and Christian leaders to continue offering prayers for Nigeria. With unity, faith, and collective effort, we will emerge stronger and more resilient,” he said. Also present at the briefing, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, highlighted their ministries’ achievements as part of the administration’s efforts to drive national development. “No One Will Impeach Fubara”- Rivers Activist

Rivers-based activist Jake Epelle on Thursday stated that nobody will impeached the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara. According to him, the people of Rivers state are solidly behind Fubara even as he called on Wike and Fubara to address the crisis in the interest of the people of Rivers state. “Let them go and try impeachment, they will not succeed,” Epelle said on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief show. “Nobody will impeach Fubara. I say that openly on national television because he hasn’t committed any impeachable offence. Nobody will impeach him; the people are solidly behind him. “Fubara will not be impeached, let them take it to the bank. The call by the FCT Minister to impeach Fubara, he does not have the constitutional power, he may have the deep pocket power and connection, but there is a process and that process will take its course. “The people are solidly behind Fubara. Whatever happens, we should not be calling for impeachment. The Rivers people are resilient and we love this country,” Epelle said. He, however, called on the two warring factions to give peace a chance, saying that “They need to come to the table of negotiation and discussion. It is very undemocratic and injustice for one person to keep dictating the conditions for peace, Fubara and Wike need to be in the same room and look each other in the eyes and settle this. This state is bigger than Wike and Fubara, and this ego-tripping and threats must stop, and it is coming from both sides, and it is not something the Rivers people are known for. My heart bleeds, my eyes are full of tears.” Punch

Natasha Suspended For Misconduct, Not Harassment Claim, Senate Replies IPU

The Nigerian Senate has defended its decision to suspend Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan before the Inter-Parliamentary Union, stating that her suspension was not related to allegations of sexual harassment but due to gross misconduct. Speaking before the IPU on Wednesday, the Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, Kafilat Ogbara, dismissed claims made by Akpoti-Uduaghan at a United Nations event that she was suspended for raising allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Ogbara said she has been mandated by the National Assembly to present a response to Akpoti-Uduaghan’s speech delivered at the 69th session of the United Nations Commission on the status of women. “In response to the call by the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Right Honorable Tulia Ackson to hear both sides of the matter, I have received a letter from the Nigerian Senate in my capacity as Chairman of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development of our parliament in Nigeria and the parliamentarian representing Nigeria at this conference,” she stated. She said, “Such allegations demand a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation. At the same time, we must ensure that fairness is upheld for all individuals involved and that justice is neither predetermined nor one-sided. “Nigeria remains firmly committed to upholding women’s rights and combating gender-based violence through strong legal frameworks and institutions. Our Parliament and Judiciary continue to undergo reforms to strengthen these efforts. “The ongoing legislative initiatives seek to address historical imbalances in women’s representation in our Parliament, including the Reserve Seats Bill and other crucial proposed constitutional amendments aimed at safeguarding the rights and privileges of women. These efforts underscore our commitment to fostering a more inclusive and equitable political space.” Addressing the allegations against Akpabio, Ogbara said, “It is important to recognise that both the allegations made and the responses provided are serious matters that require careful and unbiased scrutiny. This issue, which remains subjudice, involves multiple elements, including allegations of sexual harassment and potential violations of Senate rules. While it is necessary to engage in introspection and understand any potential connections, these matters must also be considered separately. “It is imperative that we uphold the principles of fairness and ensure that no individual is prematurely judged without a transparent and impartial process. Therefore, I call for the following actions: A thorough and unbiased investigation, ensuring that all claims and defences are examined fairly and transparently. “Protection of all parties involved, safeguarding the rights of all individuals, and preventing any form of intimidation or retaliation, accountability and transparency and upholding institutional integrity by ensuring that due process is rigorously followed.” She then read the position paper of the Senate by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele. The Senate letter read in part, “Senator Natasha-Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended for gross misconduct and unruly behaviour and not as a result of allegation of sexual harassment or assault. “The authority of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria firmly refutes the deliberate misinformation and false narrative being circulated by certain media organisations regarding the six-month suspension of Senator Natsaha-Akpoti-Uduaghan. “Let it be unequivocally stated that Senator Uduaghan was suspended solely for her persistent act of misconduct and disregard for the Senate Standing Orders.” According to the Senate, Akpoti-Uduaghan was found guilty of violating Sections 6.1 and 6.2 of the Senate rules, which led to her suspension. “If Akpoti-Uduaghan had strictly followed its guiding principles, the Senate would have treated her petition based on merit in line with its practice, noting that she never obeyed the established practices of the institution where she was serving,” Bamidele said. The statement further explained, “Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension was a decision of the Committee of the Whole Senate, following the submission of a report by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges.” The Senate accused her of “refusing to sit in her assigned seat during plenary on February 25, 2025, despite multiple pleas from the leadership and other ranking senators,” engaging in “unruly and disruptive behaviour,” and making “abusive and disrespectful remarks against the leadership of the Senate.” She was also accused of “defying and refusing to comply with the summons of the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges mandated to investigate cases of misconduct.” The Senate maintained that her suspension was necessary to restore order and uphold the integrity of the legislative body. “No senator, regardless of status, gender, or political affiliation, is above the rules of the Senate. “Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension was a direct consequence of her actions and nothing else,” the statement added. The Senate called on media organisations to “correct the misrepresentations” and refrain from spreading “falsehoods that undermine the integrity of Nigeria’s legislative process.” Akpoti-Uduaghan escalated her dispute with Akpabio on Tuesday by presenting her case at a United Nations forum. The senator representing Kogi Central called for international intervention to hold the Nigerian Senate accountable. Punch

Fubara Denied Entry Into Rivers Assembly Quarters

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, was on Wednesday denied access to the official quarters of the state House of Assembly along Aba Road, Port Harcourt, where lawmakers loyal to his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, have been holding their sittings. Fubara, who arrived at the complex in the company of top government officials, including the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, and his Chief of Staff, Edison Ehie, met a locked gate, effectively preventing his entry. Speaking to journalists at the scene, the governor accused Speaker Martin Amaewhule of deliberately avoiding him, stating that several calls placed to the lawmaker went unanswered. He stated, “Before my arrival here, I made several attempts to speak to the Speaker. I also sent a letter which was transmitted for this particular invitation. “Unfortunately, at the gate, you can see that the place is completely sealed, and there is no sign that anything is going to happen today.” The governor insisted that his actions were in the interest of the people, stressing that he remained committed to fulfilling his constitutional duties. “The reason why we are doing this, I have always said, is in the interest of our people, which is the most important thing. I don’t think there is anything to worry about. I expect to hear from them after today,” he added. After addressing the press, the governor and his entourage left the premises.

Police Scrap Law Allowing Dismissal Of Unmarried Pregnant Officers – AIG

The Nigeria Police Force has abolished regulations that previously mandated the dismissal of unmarried female officers who became pregnant while in service. The Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Aishatu Baju, who is the most senior female officer in the Force, confirmed this development on Wednesday during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief. Baju explained that all discriminatory sections of the Police Act, including Section 127, which was used to justify the dismissal of pregnant unmarried officers, had been expunged in line with ongoing police reforms. She said, “That section, along with any other part of the Police Act that discriminates against female officers, has been removed under the Police Act 2020. “The Inspector General of Police has also introduced the Nigeria Police Gender Policy to ensure full inclusivity and equal opportunities for all officers.” When asked directly whether unmarried female officers would still be dismissed if they became pregnant, Baju responded firmly, “No.” The issue gained national attention in 2021 when a police corporal, Omolola Olajide, was dismissed from the Force in Ekiti State after she became pregnant. The move sparked public outrage, prompting the Nigerian Bar Association to challenge the regulation in court. Although the Federal High Court in Abuja upheld the dismissal, ruling that officers were aware of the regulation before joining the Force, the NBA pursued the case to the Court of Appeal in Lagos. In May 2024, the appellate court nullified Sections 126 and 127 of the Nigeria Police Act, effectively putting an end to the policy. With the latest reforms, Baju reaffirmed that the Force is committed to eliminating gender-based discrimination and fostering a more inclusive institution. Punch
