Kanu Abandons Plan to Enter Defence, Insists on No-Case Submission

Kanu Abandons Plan to Enter Defence, Insists on No-Case Submission

The detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, on Monday, abandoned his earlier plan to call witnesses in his ongoing trial before the Federal High Court in Abuja. Kanu is being prosecuted on seven counts of terrorism charges brought against him by the Federal Government. On Friday, Kanu had prayed the court for an adjournment after informing the trial judge, Justice James Omotosho, that his former legal team, led by a former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), had yet to release his case file to him. Meanwhile, Kanu had earlier expressed his readiness to open his defence in a written application to the court, in which he indicated his intention to call witnesses and requested the issuance of witness summons. However, at the resumed hearing on Monday, Kanu told the court that upon reviewing the case file, he had concluded that there was no valid charge against him. He argued that since he believed the charges were unlawful and that the prosecution had failed to establish any case, there was no need for him to proceed with his defence. In response, the trial judge, Justice James Omotosho, directed Kanu to file a written address formally stating his position and to serve the prosecution accordingly. Justice Omotosho further advised the IPOB leader to consult experts in criminal law to understand the possible legal implications of his decision. The judge thereafter adjourned the case to November 4, 5, and 6 for the adoption of final written addresses, based either on Kanu’s position that no case had been established against him or for him to proceed with his defence if he decides otherwise. Bauchi gov elevates brother to first-class emir.

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has elevated his elder brother, the traditional ruler of Duguri, Adamu Duguri, to the status of a first-class emir. The letter confirming the elevation was presented to the new Emir on Friday at his palace in Duguri village, Alkaleri Local Government Area, by the Secretary to the State Government, Aminu Hammayo. While presenting the letter, Hammayo reminded the emir of the need to discharge his duties in accordance with the Constitution as well as the Bauchi State Chieftaincy Law 2025 and other relevant laws. He tasked the royal father to be vigilant and adhere strictly to administrative rules and regulations issued by the state government from time to time. He said, “The governor directed us to advise you to rule the people in fairness, justice and without ethno-religious differences. “Your focus should be on unity and peaceful coexistence of the people in the emirate.” He added that the state government prayed for a successful and peaceful reign for the newly appointed emir. In his acceptance speech, Emir Adamu Duguri thanked the governor for the honour done to his family, describing the elevation as the fulfilment of a long-awaited dream. “Today, history has been made, our dream has been realised. Our forefathers dreamt of this day, and we are grateful to Allah that we are alive to witness this great and historic moment,” he said. The monarch appealed for continued support for the state government as it works to improve the living conditions of the people. He commended the Mohammed-led administration for promoting peace and unity, as well as initiating developmental projects across the state. Before his elevation, Duguri was the District Head of Duguri under the Bauchi Emirate Council. He was elevated among the 13 new emirates created recently. Following the presentation of the appointment letter, he was immediately turbaned and will henceforth be addressed as Emir Adamu III.

Borno Gov Warns of Possible Sabotage after Boko Haram Drone Attack

Borno Gov Warns of Possible Sabotage after Boko Haram Drone Attack

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has expressed shock over the use of drones by Boko Haram terrorists to attack soldiers, saying that despite well-circulated intelligence that the Mafa area of the state would be attacked, troops could not prevent it from happening. Zulum disclosed this on Friday in Mafa town when he paid a post-assessment visit to areas attacked by Boko Haram in the early hours of Thursday. The governor, while briefing newsmen, expressed his grave concern over the emergence of this new threat, stating that the successful use of a drone by the terrorists to target a key military asset exposes a critical vulnerability in Nigeria’s airspace security. He said, “Honestly speaking, we have credible intelligence that Mafa will be attacked, and it has been duly circulated to all relevant authorities. I believe there is a need for us to come together, including the state and federal governments, as well as the military high command, to identify the gaps and address them directly.” “I believe there might be sabotage within that has to be identified and addressed. We don’t have to blame each other; we have to come together and resolve this situation,” the governor stated. Speaking on the drone use, the governor said, “One thing I want to comment on is the issue of drones. This is frightening. In Dikwa, I was told drones were used. The proliferation of drones, particularly in the hands of non-state actors, is of great concern for the entire country. We have to do something to stop the rampant use of armed drones,” Zulum said. The governor stressed that the incident is not just a concern for Borno State but a direct threat to national security. He called on the Federal Government to conduct an immediate and comprehensive review of the nation’s air safety and defence mechanisms. “Our borders need to be strengthened and our airspace needs to be strengthened as well. This is something that we need to address urgently; this is not an issue confined to Borno alone. This is the right time for the security architecture to thoroughly look into strengthening the capability of our airspace to curtail the use of armed drones by terrorists,” he said. While commending the Nigerian Armed Forces, Zulum also urged members of the public to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information on suspicious activities in their neighbourhoods. He said, “We are here to commiserate with the victims over what happened yesterday and build the confidence of our people.” The governor added, “I urge the community to be vigilant and report credible information to the Nigerian Armed Forces. The members of the CJTF should also be resilient enough to complement the effort of the Army.” PUNCH had reported that troops of Operation Hadin Kai killed more than 50 terrorists and repelled multiple coordinated attacks on military locations across Borno and Yobe States on Thursday. The Nigerian military said the simultaneous attacks occurred between midnight and 0400 hours on Thursday when terrorists launched assaults on troops’ positions in Dikwa, Mafa, Gajibo and Katarko, situated within Sectors 1 and 2 of the Joint Operations Area. The Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force North East (OPHK), Lt.-Col. Sani Uba, in a statement on Thursday in Maiduguri, said the troops fought gallantly and professionally, repelling the attacks and inflicting devastating losses on the terrorists. The statement reads: “Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) with renewed vigour successfully defeated terrorist attacks on multiple locations across the Joint Operations Area in the early hours of today, October 23, 2025. “Between midnight and 0400 hours, the terrorists launched coordinated assaults on troops’ positions in Dikwa, Mafa, Gajibo, and Katarko, situated in Sector 1 (Borno State) and Sector 2 (Yobe State) respectively,” he said. “The combined ground and air efforts resulted in the neutralisation of over 50 terrorists across all the locations,” he said.

Safeguard Nigeria’s Electoral Integrity, Tinubu Urges New INEC Chair

Safeguard Nigeria’s Electoral Integrity, Tinubu Urges New INEC Chair

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday urged the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Joash Amupitan, to defend the integrity of Nigeria’s elections, describing credible polls as the bedrock of any democracy. Speaking at the State House in Abuja shortly after administering the oath of office to the new INEC boss, Tinubu said Amupitan’s appointment, confirmed by the Senate a week ago, was a mark of confidence in his competence and character by both the executive and legislative arms of government. “I, therefore, urge you, Professor Amupitan, as you take on this assignment, to protect the integrity of our elections and the electoral process and the institutional capacity of INEC, and I wish you success on your first assignment in November 2025, which is the governorship election of Anambra state. “As the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, your nomination and confirmation are a testament to your capacity and the confidence reposed in you. “This marks the beginning of a challenging yet rewarding journey, and I trust that you will approach your responsibilities with the highest level of integrity, dedication, and patriotism,” Tinubu said. The President emphasised that Nigeria’s democracy, which has lasted since 1999, had evolved through reforms, innovation, and lessons learned from past challenges. “Our democracy has come a long way. We have consolidated and strengthened our democratic institutions, particularly our electoral system. To ensure that our democracy continues to flourish, the integrity of our electoral system must be beyond reproach,” Tinubu noted. Tinubu noted that while no electoral system is flawless, credibility and transparency at every stage, be it registration, campaigning, voting, and results collation, remain critical to sustaining public trust. “Elections safeguard the people’s exclusive right to choose their leaders and shape their future. “We must consistently improve our electoral process, addressing the challenges of yesterday and innovating for today and tomorrow,” he added. Tinubu urged Amupitan to prioritise transparency, inclusivity, and non-violence in future polls.

BREAKING: Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyers Withdraw from Case

BREAKING: Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyers Withdraw from Case

Kanu Agabi, former Attorney-General of the Federation and lead counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, on Thursday, applied to withdraw his representation in the ongoing terrorism trial before the Federal High Court in Abuja. Kanu is facing trial on a seven-count charge bordering on terrorism, filed against him by the Federal Government. When the matter was called on Thursday, Agabi informed the court that he would no longer be representing the IPOB leader, adding that the defendant had decided to take back the case from them. In the same manner, all the Senior Advocates of Nigeria involved in the case also announced their withdrawal from the case. Kanu, confirming the development, told the court that he would be representing himself for now, but noted that the position might change later. The trial judge, Justice James Omotosho, asked whether he should assign a lawyer to represent him, but the defendant (Kanu) declined. Meanwhile, addressing the court orally to open his defence, Kanu argued that the court lacked jurisdiction to try him. Recall that Justice Omotosho, on October 16, granted the defendant six consecutive days, beginning from October 23, to open and close his defence in view of the accelerated hearing earlier granted in the case. Kanu had listed former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami; Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; Minister of Works, Dave Umahi; Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu; a former Chief of Army Staff, Gen Tukur Buratai (rtd); a former Minister of Defence, Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (rtd), and others as part of his witnesses. More details later…

Amupitan Resumes Next Week Ahead of Anambra Poll

Amupitan Resumes Next Week Ahead of Anambra Poll

The new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan, is expected to officially assume office next week, ahead of the November 8 Anambra State governorship election. Multiple officials at INEC informed The PUNCH that Amupitan would formally take over the reins of the commission after his swearing-in by President Bola Tinubu, a ceremony traditionally conducted at the Federal Executive Council meeting, expected to be held next week. “Prof. Amupitan will assume office on the day he is sworn in by the President. “The tradition is that he gets sworn in before a Federal Executive Council meeting, and he would be escorted by INEC National Commissioners to resume office immediately,” a senior official involved in the transition process said. An INEC Director confirmed that while the exact date remains uncertain, the swearing-in is imminent. “He will assume his position after his inauguration,” the official said. Activity within the commission also suggested that preparations are underway for Amupitan’s arrival. An insider revealed, “I heard some of his ‘personal staff’ have been showing up at the commission, hoping he will be sworn in during the FEC meeting.” Another insider added, “I learnt that he may likely assume office next week.” When contacted by our correspondent, the Director Voter Education and Publicity Victoria Eta-Messi said, “We are expecting him but there is no information on when he will officially assume office.” Amupitan, a 58-year-old Professor of Law at the University of Jos and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, was confirmed as INEC Chairman by the Senate last Thursday after a voice vote led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The don’s confirmation followed a rigorous screening process during which he responded to a range of questions posed by lawmakers. President Tinubu had earlier nominated Amupitan, widely regarded for his expertise in constitutional and international law, to replace Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who recently concluded his tenure. In the interim, National Commissioner May Agbamuche-Mbu, who has been serving as the Acting INEC Chairman, recently chaired various stakeholder meetings at thecommission’s headquarters. Meanwhile, INEC has reaffirmed its commitment and preparedness to conduct a free, fair, and credible governorship election in Anambra State on November 8, 2025. INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, gave the assurance in Awka on Tuesday during a forum with journalists and on-air personalities ahead of the poll. Olumekun said the commission had been implementing a comprehensive operational plan covering logistics, technology, training, stakeholder engagement, and security coordination. “Permit me to assure you that INEC is fully prepared for the upcoming Anambra governorship election. The level of readiness is both practical and measurable. All non-sensitive materials have been delivered to the state, while sensitive materials will arrive in due course under strict security arrangements,” he said. The INEC official disclosed that Permanent Voter Cards from the recently concluded Continuous Voter Registration exercise in Anambra were ready for collection from Wednesday, October 22 to Sunday, October 26, 2025. He urged voters who registered during the exercise to visit their respective wards to collect their cards ahead of the election. Olumekun noted that INEC officials were in Anambra for a week-long readiness assessment, including meetings with security agencies under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security, transport unions, and other stakeholders. He cautioned against the spread of fake news and misinformation, which he described as one of the biggest threats to electoral integrity. “False stories and manipulated videos can create unnecessary tension and erode public trust. Let truth remain your only compass. Verify before amplifying,” he told journalists. Olumekun also emphasised that accreditation for journalists covering the election would not be extended beyond the approved window, noting that the list of accredited reporters would be shared with the Resident Electoral Commissioner and security agencies to ensure proper coordination and safety during collation. In her remarks, the Anambra State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Elizabeth Awgu, assured that all logistics had been finalised to guarantee the timely distribution of materials across the state, including riverine areas. “Materials will leave the CBN state headquarters on Thursday afternoon. If that happens, there will be no late arrival of materials. We are very much prepared for this election,” she said. Awgu added that polling would commence at 8:30 a.m. and end at 2:30 p.m., assuring voters that anyone on the queue within the timeframe would be allowed to cast their ballot. Also present at the forum were the HOD, ICT/VR, Emeka Nnaji; HOD, Legal, Mrs. Olachi Nwuko; and HOD, Electoral Operations, Ejikeme Ejimofor, who all restated INEC’s commitment to a transparent exercise. “Together with the media, we are determined to make the 2025 Anambra governorship election a milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey — peaceful, transparent, and credible,” Olumekun concluded.

The Head of the Economic Community of West African States Election Observation Mission for Côte d’Ivoire’s upcoming presidential election, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, arrived in Abidjan on Monday afternoon to lead the regional bloc’s efforts in monitoring the polls scheduled for October 25. According to a statement issued by ECOWAS on Tuesday, “the deployment of this mission is part of the 2001 Additional Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance of ECOWAS and once again illustrates ECOWAS’ unwavering commitment to promoting peace, stability, and democratic consolidation within the community.” Osinbajo, who served as Vice President of Nigeria from May 2015 to May 2023, is at the helm of a large team of 187 ECOWAS observers. The statement also states that the delegation includes 66 additional observers from the African Union. Supporting him in this role are Baboucarr Blaise Ismaïla JAGNE, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of The Gambia, and Mahamat Saleh Annadif, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Chad. The statement added, “Among the ECOWAS observers are 150 short-term observers, 22 young observers from the pilot project “Integration of Young People into the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission” and 15 long-term observers, electoral experts with various profiles, who officially began their activities on Friday, October 3, in Abidjan, to monitor developments in the pre-election, election, and post-election processes.” Welcomed on his arrival in Abidjan by Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security of the ECOWAS Commission, the ECOWAS Resident Representative in Côte d’Ivoire, Fanta CISSE, among others. The presidential election in Côte d’Ivoire is scheduled for 25 October 2025. President Alassane Ouattara, age 83, announced that he will run for a fourth term in that election.

Teenager Becomes Nigeria’s ‘Vice President for a Day’

Teenager Becomes Nigeria’s ‘Vice President for a Day’

A teenager, Joy Ogah, symbolically took over the seat of Vice President Kashim Shettima for a day, using the platform to advocate passionately for the rights and education of girls across Nigeria. In a statement issued by the Office of the Vice President on Tuesday, the symbolic handover took place during a meeting on Monday between Vice President Shettima and a delegation from PLAN International, led by Helen Mfonobong Idiong, Director of Programme, Quality, and Innovation. From the Vice President’s chair, Ogah highlighted the challenges facing girls in the country, noting that over 10.5 million children remain out of school, more than 60 per cent of whom are girls. “We must invest in education that is safe and inclusive for every child in Nigeria,” she said, urging policymakers and stakeholders to prioritise interventions that protect and empower young girls. Ogah also urged the government to provide free sanitary products in schools and ensure access to clean water, sanitation, and proper nutrition for all children. She stressed that every girl deserves a classroom, a choice, dignity, and not silence. “When girls are protected, peace becomes possible. I may be the Vice President for a day, but the struggles I represent cannot end in a day. They must continue in our policies, our classrooms, our conversations, and our budgets,” she said. Shettima also used the occasion to reaffirm President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to advancing girl-child education and inclusive learning nationwide. “We will continue the engagement with PLAN International and see where the force and strength of government can be brought to bear on your solid advice on girl-child education. “In President Bola Tinubu, you have an ally you can believe in and invest your trust in,” Shettima said. Recent reports from PUNCH Online indicate growing national momentum toward gender inclusivity in education. On October 20, 2025, advocacy groups urged all tiers of government to invest more in girl-child education, mentorship, and sensitisation programmes, calling for stronger efforts to eliminate gender bias in schools. In September, the Federal Government launched the Renewed Hope Social Impact Interventions (RH-SII774) targeting over 10 million women across all 774 local government areas through livelihood grants, digital inclusion, and clean energy initiatives. Similarly, the Ministry of Education and the National Assembly have reinforced support for gender parity and access to learning. The government’s recent workshop on inclusive education, coupled with the Student Loans Act and increased education funding, reflects ongoing institutional commitment to equity — a goal echoed in Joy Ogah’s symbolic “Vice President for a Day” advocacy.

NLC Gives FG Four Weeks to Resolve ASUU Crisis

NLC Gives FG Four Weeks to Resolve ASUU Crisis

The Nigeria Labour Congress has resolved to issue a four-week ultimatum to the Federal Government should it fail to conclude negotiations with all tertiary institutions-based unions. The NLC also condemned the no-work-no-pay policy introduced by the government as a form of sanction to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities for daring to embark on a nationwide strike. The president of the NLC, Joe Ajaero made this known in an ongoing interactive session with labour correspondents in Abuja. The interactive session followed the meeting between the NLC and leaders of tertiary institutions’ based unions at the NLC headquarters in Abuja. “We have decided to give the federal government four weeks to conclude all negotiations in this sector. They have started talks with ASUU but the problem in this sector goes beyond ASUU. “That is why we are extending this to four weeks. If after four weeks this negotiation is not concluded, the organs of the NEC will meet and take a nationwide action that all workers in the country, all unions in the country will be involved so that we get to the root of all this. “ The era of signing agreements, negotiations and threatening the unions involved, that era has come to an end. “The policy, the so-called policy of no work, no pay, will henceforth be no pay, no work. You can’t benefit from an action you instigated. We have discovered that most, 90% of strike actions in this country are caused by failure to obey agreements,” Ajaero said. The Nigerian higher education system has been faced with chronic instability, the latest leading to the closure of universities nationwide due to the ongoing strike by ASUU. Recall that ASUU National President Professor Chris Piwuna announced the strike at a press briefing at the University of Abuja on Sunday, following the expiry of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the government on September 28. The union cited unresolved issues relating to staff welfare, infrastructure, salary arrears, and the implementation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement. Negotiations in recent weeks failed to avert industrial action. Education Minister Tunji Alausa said two weeks ago that talks had reached a final phase, noting the government had released N50bn for earned academic allowances and allocated N150bn in the 2025 budget for a needs assessment to be disbursed in three instalments. However, ASUU rejected these measures as insufficient. The union is demanding full implementation of the 2009 agreement, release of three-and-a-half months of withheld salaries, sustainable funding for universities, protection against victimisation, payment of outstanding promotion and salary arrears, and release of withheld deductions for cooperatives and union contributions. The NLC emphasised its full solidarity with ASUU and other tertiary education unions, calling for robust participation from all union leaders. It also highlighted the principle of a converse stance, “No Pay, No Work”, urging the government to honour collective agreements and respect the rights of workers. The emergency meeting is expected to chart the next steps for industrial action and explore strategies to safeguard the welfare of university staff, as well as the quality and continuity of public tertiary education in Nigeria.
