  Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has defended the decision to site the proposed Ede International Airport in his hometown, arguing that his position as governor should not prevent him from developing his own community. He spoke on Tuesday at a town hall meeting organised by Arise Television for candidates contesting Saturday’s Osun governorship election. Adeleke, who is seeking re-election on the platform of the Accord Party, was responding to questions on the controversial airport project, which has drawn criticism from opposition parties over its cost and location. “I wish my town to be small London. So because I’m a governor, I should abandon my own town? Go and fact-check it. I just told you I just came back from Ife. Am I from Ife? I’m from Ede,” he said. The governor listed several Osun towns where his administration had executed projects, insisting he had not neglected other parts of the state in favour of Ede. “Am I from Ila? They have never done any dualised road in Ila. Am I from Bongo? Am I from Ikire? Am I from Iwo? Am I from Ilesa? Even all the towns in Osun, do I have a flyover in Ede? No. But I cannot be fixing other towns alone and abandon mine. I’m not a bastard. I will fix my town too,” Adeleke said. Turning to the airport project, the governor explained that the state currently has no functional airport, describing the existing facility as an airdrome that his predecessor had handed over to the Nigerian Air Force for training purposes. “It’s not my fault. When we’re about to build this airport, I said this is not acceptable. In the South-West, we are the only state without an airport. So I invited experts to go and look for a suitable site,” he said. Adeleke said the experts who scouted for a location eventually settled for Ede, adding that the choice mirrored precedents in other states, including Ogun State, where he said the airport was sited on farmland in Abeokuta. “They went around, and they ended up in Ede. Go to Ogun State; the airport is on farmland in Abeokuta. It’s the same thing. There’s nothing I can do about that,” he said. The Ede airport project, initially awarded at N99.5bn, has faced backlash from the All Progressives Congress and the Allied Peoples Movement, whose governorship candidates have questioned the technical capacity of the contractor and the rising cost of the project, now put at over N130bn. The APC candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, had alleged that the contract was awarded to a firm with a background in interior decoration rather than aviation infrastructure, while the APM had urged the Adeleke administration to instead upgrade the existing airstrip at Ido-Osun. Adeleke is seeking a second term against Oyebamiji and other candidates in Saturday’s election.

The gesture, which was captured in a viral video, attracted cheers from students as Chinyere presented the goat to her son before hugging him tightly. Speaking in an interview with BBC News Pidgin on Monday, the woman said the gift was her way of rewarding Promise for making her proud, obeying her instructions and staying away from cultism. She said she had promised to surprise him if he successfully completed his studies without disappointing her. “I don’t have money for a 4matic jeep, and I love that guy, my son. I said, let me buy this goat as a gift. “When he was going to school, I told him not to affiliate himself with cultism and to make me proud by not dropping out. I told him that if he made me proud, I was going to surprise him. He didn’t disappoint me. “He has been respectful to the family and everyone. He’s a footballer, and I want to prove my love for him. That is why I bought the goat for him.” According to Chinyere, she spent N120,000 on the goat, adding that she would have paid more if necessary to fulfil her promise. “I bought the goat for N120,000. I said even if it is N200,000, I will try my best to see that I come with that goat,” she said. The mother said she was delighted by the students’ reaction as she made her way to her son with the animal. “As I was walking, they (students) were screaming. I was happy, and I knew my son too was,” she added. Reacting to the surprise, Promise said he initially thought his coursemates were calling him to witness an engagement ceremony after hearing students shouting, “say yes.” He said he was shocked when he discovered that his mother had come to the school with a goat for him. “It was one of my coursemates that called me because I thought it was an engagement serenade because people in the vicinity were screaming, ‘say yes.’ “So I was surprised for her to even call me to come and see my mum because she brought a goat. I was asking if she knew my mum because I wasn’t convinced. “I came, happy and deeply emotional. I wasn’t ashamed. I was extremely happy. I am not even ashamed in school; why then would I be ashamed of my mum or her action?” The video of the mother presenting the goat to her son has since generated reactions online, with many Nigerians applauding her for celebrating her son’s academic milestone in a unique way.

  Identical Nigerian twins, Hussaini and Hassan Malami, have been employed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited as members of the NNPC Tigers Class of 2026, overcoming an initial setback after one of them was reluctant to apply due to a misunderstanding about the company’s recruitment process. The account was contained in a profile by Senior Communications Advisor, NNPC Limited, Adaobi Oniwinde, on Monday. Hussaini, who had always aspired to work with NNPC, applied when recruitment opened and encouraged his twin brother, Hassan, to do the same. Hassan, however, was initially reluctant, believing that NNPC recruited only one person from a family and not wanting to jeopardise his brother’s chances. He was also more interested in joining the Nigerian Air Force and already had a job in the banking sector. According to the profile, Hassan eventually applied after persistent encouragement from Hussaini and as the application deadline approached. The twins subsequently took the computer-based recruitment test on the same day but in different locations, with Hussaini sitting for his in Sokoto and Hassan in Kaduna. Following a recruitment process that included interviews, both brothers received employment letters on the same day. Hussaini said he discovered the employment offer after midnight and was eager to share the news with his family. “I opened the email after midnight and wanted to wake everybody up to tell them,” he said. Hassan said he learnt about his successful application through the family WhatsApp group when he woke up. “That’s when the pressure hit me. I was now nervous about the possibility of not being successful once Hussaini shared his news,” he said. Both brothers eventually secured positions at NNPC, with Hussaini joining NNPC Exploration & Production Limited and Hassan joining NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company. For Hassan, his new role has exposed him to aspects of Nigeria’s gas industry that were previously unfamiliar to him. “I didn’t know there was a whole business dedicated to transporting gas,” he said. “Now I’ve seen how gas powers plants and manufacturing companies. Hearing that gas is the future is one thing. Seeing how it is happening is another.” Although Hassan had initially preferred a career in the military, he now considers his work in the energy sector another form of national service. He said he still hoped to explore military service before reaching the age limit in 2030. For Hussaini, his employment at NNPC has reinforced his interest in contributing to the development of the country’s energy sector.   Dantani Aruba, a beneficiary of the Kano State Government’s mass wedding initiative, has expressed delight after marrying another wife through the programme. Aruba, who spoke during the mass wedding ceremony on Saturday, said the initiative had allowed him to expand his family without bearing the financial burden usually associated with marriage. In a now-trending video recorded by NewsCentralTV on Monday, he said, “I just married another wife, and I am happy that I have married another one. My wives are now three.” Aruba was among the beneficiaries who tied the knot at the mass wedding organised by the Kano State Government as part of its intervention to assist people who may be unable to afford the cost of marriage. The PUNCH reports that the state government under the leadership of Governor Yusuf Abba sponsored the wedding of 1,500 couples at a cost of N1.5bn. The programme, coordinated by the Kano State Hisbah Board, targets people from low-income backgrounds, including widows, widowers, divorcees, spinsters and bachelors. The government had earlier said the funds would cover dowry, empowerment support and household items for the beneficiaries. According to the state government, each couple is entitled to support including dowry, furniture, food items and other materials to help them establish their homes. The programme, popularly known as Auren Gata, was introduced in Kano in 2012 by the then Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, when 100 couples, mainly widows and divorcees, were married at the palace. The initiative has continued under successive administrations, with the number of beneficiaries increasing over the years in response to growing demand. The 2026 edition also accommodated beneficiaries in polygamous marriages, in line with Islamic practice.

  The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has dismissed as false a widely circulated notice claiming that a special redeployment window had been opened for corps members, urging the public to disregard the information. The scheme flagged the notice on its verified X handle as fake on Friday. The fraudulent notice, styled as an “URGENT NOTICE: NYSC REDEPLOYMENT,” was addressed to “Parents/Guardians” and claimed the redeployment window was “now open” because of “issues of National Security, Health, and State of the Nation.” It urged “Corps Members with genuine grounds” to “apply on time to ensure their safety, proper placement, and timely completion of service.” The notice also asked those seeking help to “please contact” two listed phone numbers “ASAP,” adding that “valid documents are required and all applications must follow NYSC guidelines.” In response, the NYSC’s National Directorate Headquarters flagged the notice on its verified X handle, @officialnyscng, tagging it “Disclaimer” and stamping it with a bold “FAKE NEWS” watermark to warn the public against the circulating message. The scheme did not disclose the identities of those behind the fake notice as of the time of this report. It is not the first time fraudsters have exploited the redeployment process to extort money from unsuspecting corps members and their families. The NYSC, currently led by its Director-General, Olakunle Nafiu, has consistently warned that deployment and redeployment matters are handled exclusively through its official portal and offices, and that the scheme does not authorise agents or phone-based processing for such requests. Corps members and members of the public have been urged to verify any purported NYSC communication through the scheme’s official website and social media handles before taking action or making payments.

NANS Issues Ogun 72-Hour Deadline to Rescue Abducted Students

  The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the Ogun State Government and security agencies to secure the release of five students abducted from Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, bring to justice those behind the killing of a student of D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori, and address the worsening security situation around tertiary institutions across the state. The students’ body warned that it would embark on sustained peaceful protests across Ogun State if its demands were not met within the stipulated period. NANS also called on the state government to send a high-powered delegation to condole with the family of Ahmed Sekinat, the D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic student killed during a robbery attack, and visit another student receiving treatment for gunshot injuries at the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta. The demands were made on Wednesday during a press conference at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Secretariat in Abeokuta by the Secretary-General of NANS, Oladimeji Uthman, popularly known as “Dan Fodio.” According to him, students across Ogun tertiary institutions now live in fear because of persistent cases of kidnapping, armed robbery, cult violence, rape and other criminal activities. Also present at the briefing were the President of the Students’ Union Government of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, Akinpelu Timothy; Olabisi Onabanjo University Students’ Union President, Kehinde Bamgbose; Okunuga Opeyemi of D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, and other student leaders. Uthman said, “The recent abduction of five students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, the killing of a female student of D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori, and repeated armed robbery attacks around Tai Solarin Federal University of Education, Ijebu-Ode, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, and Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic, Ijebu-Igbo, underscore the worsening security situation in the state. “For far too long, students have continued to live in fear. The safety of lives and property on and around our campuses has been grossly threatened by armed robbery, kidnapping, rape, cult-related violence and other criminal activities. Students can no longer move freely, attend lectures or return to their hostels without fear of attack.” The NANS scribe lamented that previous attempts by the association to engage security agencies through strategic meetings yielded no result, alleging that the agencies ignored invitations extended by the students’ body. “It is deeply regrettable that despite the growing insecurity across off-campus hostels in our tertiary institutions, the National Association of Nigerian Students wrote to all heads of security agencies in the state requesting a strategic meeting to discuss practical and lasting solutions. “Regrettably, these requests were not honoured. This refusal to engage with the legitimate representatives of Nigerian students has frustrated genuine efforts aimed at finding collaborative solutions while students continue to suffer armed robbery attacks, kidnappings, violent assaults and loss of lives,” he said. Uthman, however, commended the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, for deploying an operational police aircraft to strengthen security operations in the state, noting that the move would enhance aerial surveillance, intelligence gathering and rescue efforts. He stressed that more decisive action was needed. “Consequently, NANS issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the Ogun State Government, the Ogun State Police Command, the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and other relevant security agencies to rescue the abducted students, arrest and prosecute those responsible for the murder of the D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic student and bring all perpetrators of violent attacks against students to justice. “Failure to meet these demands within the stipulated 72 hours will leave the national students’ body with no option but to commence sustained peaceful mass actions and statewide protests until justice is served and adequate security is guaranteed for every student in Ogun State,” he said. To improve security, NANS called for increased patrols around campuses, the establishment of permanent security posts in vulnerable student communities, deployment of the Ogun State Anti-Violent Crime Team to tertiary institutions, stronger collaboration among school authorities, host communities and security agencies, and the creation of an Ogun Security Agencies–Student Leaders Relations Forum. Uthman described the planned protest as peaceful and urged students’ unions, labour groups, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to support the campaign against insecurity in tertiary institutions. The ultimatum comes amid a series of security incidents involving students in Ogun State. On July 27, an HND II Marketing student of D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori, was shot dead during a robbery attack in the Eruku community, while another student sustained gunshot injuries and is receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta. Similarly, the Students’ Union of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, recently announced the abduction of five students from a private hostel in Ipara Remo, Remo North Local Government Area. The Ogun State Police Command said it had activated tactical units to ensure the safe rescue of the victims after the incident, which occurred on the night of July 29, 2026.

We are coming. We are coming. We will preach in buses; we will preach everywhere,” he said in the video. The cleric described the proposal as an attack on Christians rather than a genuine effort to improve public safety. According to him, the proposed restriction reflects what he sees as a broader pattern of policies targeting Christians. He added that Nigeria belongs to people of, different religious beliefs and should remain so. The controversy followed public concerns over provisions in the Federal Road Safety Corps (Amendment) Bill, 2026 relating to preaching and hawking in commercial vehicles. However, the Senate has clarified that the amendment bill does not introduce a new prohibition on preaching or hawking in commercial vehicles. According to the Senate, the provision has existed since the enactment of the FRSC Establishment Act, 2007, where it appeared as Item 36 of the Second Schedule, and was later retained as Item 49 in the proposed amendment. It also cited Regulation 220 of the National Road Traffic Regulations, 2012. The Senate also dismissed claims that the bill seeks to ban street preaching or restrict religious activities in public places. “It is about the safety of commuters and other road users and is not intended to undermine any religious activity in the public space,” the Senate said in a statement. The upper chamber further clarified that the bill was not sponsored by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, explaining that it originated in the House of Representatives and is before the Senate as a concurrence bill. The Senate added that the legislative process was still ongoing and urged stakeholders to channel theirgy concerns through the appropriate legislative process before the bill is passed.

  IBADAN — Major General Auwalu Mahmuda has assumed command as the 56th General Officer Commanding, GOC, 2 Division, Nigerian Army. The handing and taking over ceremony took place on Sunday, August 3, 2026, at the Headquarters of 2 Division, Adekunle Fajuyi Cantonment, Ibadan, Oyo State, according to a statement by the Acting Deputy Director, 2 Division Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Danjuma Jonah Danjuma. In the statement made available to journalists, Maj-Gen Mahmuda expressed gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, for the appointment. He pledged commitment to take the Division to greater heights, describing the opportunity to command one of the premier formations in the Nigerian Army as rare. The new GOC eulogised his predecessor, Major General Chinedu Ralph Nnebeife, for his “incredible achievements” during his tenure. He assured that he would build on the legacies and “keep the flag flying.” Earlier, Maj-Gen Nnebeife thanked the Chief of Defence Staff, General OO Oluyede, who appointed him as GOC when he was COAS, and also appreciated the COAS for the opportunity to lead the Division and his subsequent posting to command the newly established 10 Division in Jalingo, Taraba State. He said the Division recorded significant operational successes under his watch since assuming command on August 19, 2025, including the recent rescue operation of July 10, 2026. Nnebeife attributed the successes to the efforts of officers and soldiers, as well as the prayers of the Division. He promised to remain a “worthy ambassador of the Tiger Family” and urged troops to extend the same cooperation to the new GOC.

  The Oyo State Government, through the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) programme, has commenced a capacity-building training for youths on job creation and entrepreneurship, with participants urged to embrace entrepreneurship as a pathway to wealth creation, self-reliance and economic development. The three-day training, held at Pinnacle Hotel, Arapaja Road, Odo Ona Kekere, Ibadan, is part of the African Development Bank-funded SAPZ initiative aimed at equipping young people with entrepreneurial, business and financial skills required to establish and grow sustainable enterprises. Speaking at the opening of the workshop, the State Project Coordinator of SAPZ, Mr Ajetunmobi Akinwumi, said the initiative was designed to address the growing challenge of youth unemployment by equipping participants with the knowledge and skills needed to become successful entrepreneurs and job creators. Akinwumi noted that despite several government interventions, many young people still lacked the practical knowledge, entrepreneurial mindset and financial literacy needed to establish and sustain successful businesses. He said: “Youth unemployment remains one of the most pressing socio-economic challenges facing Nigeria. Oyo State has a rapidly growing youth population, but the availability of formal employment has not kept pace with the demand. “This training is therefore aimed at equipping participants with practical knowledge in entrepreneurship, business planning and financial management to enable them become employers of labour rather than job seekers.” The coordinator said the programme was part of the state’s commitment to empowering young people with the skills required to drive innovation, enterprise development and economic growth. According to him, the SAPZ programme seeks to create opportunities for youths, women and entrepreneurs by strengthening their capacity to build sustainable businesses and take advantage of emerging economic opportunities. He explained that participants would receive practical training in entrepreneurship, business development, financial literacy, innovation, leadership, communication, business planning and enterprise management. Akinwumi added that at the end of the workshop, participants were expected to strengthen their entrepreneurial capacity, improve their financial literacy, develop viable business ideas, and contribute meaningfully to economic growth and community development. Also speaking, the Executive Chairman of Oluyole Local Government, Engr. Hakeem Olatunji, described the training as a foundation for successful entrepreneurship, stressing that knowledge remained the most valuable asset for anyone seeking to create wealth and employment. According to him, government alone cannot provide jobs for the growing population, making it imperative for young people to acquire entrepreneurial skills capable of making them self-reliant. “Without adequate knowledge, there is no way anyone can create jobs or become a successful entrepreneur. This capacity-building programme is equipping our youths with the knowledge required to establish businesses and become self-sustaining,” he said. Olatunji urged participants to take full advantage of the opportunity, adding that entrepreneurship and innovation offered immense opportunities for economic growth and job creation. “I believe government will also support them financially, but what matters most is the knowledge they are receiving here today. Knowledge is power, and it can transform them into employers of labour,” he added. One of the participants, Bamigboye Tobi, a final-year student of the University of Ibadan, expressed optimism that the programme would enable him to expand his entrepreneurial aspirations. Tobi said he travelled from the University of Ibadan to attend the workshop because of the opportunities it offered. “I see this training as a great opportunity to become an employer of labour. I believe I will be equipped with the entrepreneurial and financial knowledge required to grow my business, and from what I have seen so far, I am confident I will leave with valuable knowledge that will positively impact my future,” he said. The SAPZ programme is being implemented in Oyo State as part of broader efforts by the Federal Government, the African Development Bank and participating states to promote job creation, entrepreneurship and inclusive economic development.

The council said the initiative was designed to provide resources, including security equipment and operational tools, to strengthen efforts against criminal activities threatening communities in Yoruba-speaking areas. The Secretary-General of CYE, Dr. Victor Taiwo, disclosed this while addressing journalists at the organisation’s office along Iwo Road, Ibadan, where he appealed to wealthy Yoruba individuals and other well-meaning Nigerians to support the campaign. Taiwo said the funds generated from the initiative would be used to acquire equipment such as surveillance drones and other security gadgets required to improve intelligence gathering and response operations. He expressed confidence that the proposed security intervention would significantly reduce cases of banditry, kidnapping and terrorism within a short period if the necessary resources were made available. “We have identified a solution that can stop banditry, kidnapping and terrorism, but we are not prepared to disclose it at this stage. What we need now are the necessary resources,” Taiwo said. He added that the council believed the security plan could achieve major results within 60 days once fully implemented. According to him, the proposed intervention would cover 10 states, including Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Lagos, Ekiti, Ondo, Kwara, Kogi, Edo and Delta states. The CYE Secretary-General lamented that his previous warnings since 2015 over what he described as alleged plans by criminal elements to expand their activities into parts of the South-West had not received adequate attention. He, however, said the council would not remain passive in the face of growing security concerns. “We have to find ways to halt the further expansion of banditry and secure the release of those in captivity. Yoruba people are not ready to succumb to what we perceive as threats. We will resist with all the resources available to us,” he stated. Taiwo disclosed that the fundraising campaign had already begun receiving contributions from some individuals, while urging more Yoruba sons and daughters with the capacity to support the initiative to come forward. He also alleged that several communities had been affected by insecurity, claiming that 17 traditional rulers had been killed in Kwara State and that some residents had abandoned their communities due to fear of attacks. The council further alleged that armed groups were attempting to expand their activities into Yoruba communities, warning that urgent action was needed to prevent further deterioration of the security situation. Taiwo criticised political leaders for what he described as inadequate response to the worsening insecurity and called for greater commitment from stakeholders. “We most humbly, respectfully and dutifully call on our people who have been blessed by God to respond to this patriotic call and support efforts to safeguard our land before the security situation deteriorates further,” he said. The council maintained that the security challenge required collective action involving government, traditional institutions, community leaders and individuals with the resources to support efforts aimed at protecting lives and property.
