BREAKING: Makinde Reveals Preferred Successor

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has identified Mr. Abimbola Adekambi, a former Commissioner for Finance during the administration of late ex-governor Abiola Ajimobi, as his preferred successor for the 2027 governorship election. The disclosure was confirmed on Wednesday night by the Oyo State Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Michael Ogunshina, during an exclusive telephone conversation. The development is already generating fresh debate within political circles, cutting across both the ruling PDP and opposition parties in the state. It was gathered that the decision emerged from a series of high-level consultations involving key stakeholders and power brokers within Oyo’s political landscape. Although Governor Makinde has yet to make a formal public declaration, Ogunshina affirmed that the decision has effectively been communicated within party ranks. “Yes, it is confirmed, the governor has announced him,” Ogunshina said. Adekambi, a technocrat with a strong background in finance and public administration, previously served under the administration of the late former governor Ajimobi and is widely regarded as experienced in fiscal management. His emergence as Makinde’s preferred successor signals a strategic political move that could reshape alignments ahead of the 2027 polls. Political observers note that the announcement may trigger internal recalibration within the PDP, as well as influence the calculations of opposition parties preparing for the next electoral cycle. While supporters of the move see it as a continuity strategy anchored on competence and governance experience, critics argue it could spark internal contestation within the ruling party over the selection process. As the political atmosphere gradually builds toward 2027, Makinde’s endorsement of Adekambi is expected to remain a focal point in Oyo State’s evolving succession dynamics.

Nwosu, who was the youngest member of the 1980 AFCON squad, was widely celebrated for his role in Nigeria’s triumph at the Africa Cup of Nations, where the Green Eagles secured their first continental title on home soil. The midfielder was known for his vision, creativity and technical ability, and went on to become a prominent figure in Nigerian domestic football. Following his retirement from active football, the former international remained connected to the sport as a coach and mentor, helping to nurture younger players. Nwosu’s death comes days after Nigerian football lost another iconic figure. Former Super Eagles coach Adegboye Onigbinde, who led Nigeria to the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan and South Korea, died on March 9 at the age of 88. Both Nwosu and Onigbinde were prominent members of the Green Eagles set-up of the 1980s, with Onigbinde having served as coach of the side between 1982 and 1984.

BREAKING: Again, Dangote Refinery Hikes Petrol Price to N1,175

The cost of goods and services across Nigeria is expected to rise further following a fresh increase in petrol prices after the Dangote Petroleum Refinery raised the gantry price of Premium Motor Spirit to N1,175 per litre, marking the third upward adjustment within a week. The latest price revision comes hours after The PUNCH projected that petrol prices could rise for the third time within a week following the temporary suspension of petrol sales at the refinery on Sunday. The refinery announced the price hike to marketers on Monday, raising the gantry price of Premium Motor Spirit to N1,175 per litre from N995 per litre announced on Friday, representing an increase of N180 or about 18.1 per cent within three days. It also revised the gantry price of Automotive Gas Oil, commonly known as diesel, to N1,620 per litre. A senior official of the refinery, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to comment publicly, confirmed the adjustment to our correspondent, stating that the revision had already been communicated to marketers and depot operators. “Yes, the gantry prices have been adjusted. PMS is now N1,175 per litre while Automotive Gas Oil is N1,620 per litre,” the official said. “The market has been extremely volatile, and replacement costs have shifted significantly in recent days. These adjustments reflect prevailing market fundamentals and the cost environment we are currently operating in.” Checks by our correspondent on the industry pricing platform, petroleumprice.ng showed that the revised rates had already been updated across petroleum depot pricing systems, indicating a shift in the benchmark price used by downstream marketers. The new price is the third surge in petrol prices within a week, following adjustments that pushed gantry prices from N774 to N995 per litre. As a result, retail pump prices in several states now exceed N1,000 per litre, as some stations now dispense petrol at about N1,200/litre, intensifying economic pressures on Nigerians. The latest hike is expected to trigger another round of increases at filling stations nationwide, as higher fuel costs typically translate into higher transportation, logistics, and production costs for businesses. It also betrays efforts by the Federal Government, through the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, to secure crude oil supply for the Dangote Petroleum Refinery through third-party international traders, in a bid to sustain domestic refining operations. Officials, however, warned that the intervention may not immediately translate into lower petrol prices for consumers. Nigerians currently grapple with high fuel prices, following the recent hikes in the cost of the commodities by the $20bn Lekki-based refinery.

BREAKING: Four Rivers Lawmakers Make U-turn, Back Fubara’s Impeachment

Four members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who recently withdrew from the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara have reversed their decision and declared support for the process. The lawmakers made the U-turn on Friday during a live broadcast monitored by PUNCH Online, days after publicly calling for an amicable resolution of the political crisis rocking the state. Their latest position comes amid growing tensions within the Assembly over the impeachment move against Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu. The House, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, had last week commenced impeachment proceedings against the governor and his deputy over alleged gross misconduct. The allegations include the demolition of the Assembly complex and the alleged spending of public funds without legislative approval. However, between Monday and Wednesday, the four lawmakers announced their withdrawal from the impeachment process, citing the need for dialogue and political reconciliation. Members of the Assembly on Friday insisted that the impeachment process would continue, describing it as constitutional and the only solution to the political impasse in the state. The development followed the Assembly’s failure to reconvene for plenary on Thursday, one week after adjourning its last sitting, amid speculation of internal disagreements among lawmakers. With the latest reversal by the four legislators, the impeachment process appears to have regained momentum within the House. More details later…
