Telecos Seeks 100% Tariff Increase, Awaiting NCC Approval.

Nigerian telecommunications companies have proposed a 100 per cent increase in their tariffs, pending approval from the government. The proposal, which has been submitted to the Nigerian Communications Commission, aims to address rising operational costs, including inflation and increased service delivery expenses. The disclosure was made by the Chief Executive Officer, MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola, during an interview on Arise TV on Thursday. However, the CEO expressed that it remains uncertain whether the Nigerian Communications Commission—the telecom regulator, will approve the proposal. According to Toriola, the proposed tariff hike is necessary for the sustainability of the industry, which has been facing significant financial pressures due to rising operational costs. “We’ve put forward requests of approximately 100 per cent tariff increases to regulators. I doubt they’re going to approve that quantum of increases because they are very, very sensitive to the current economic situation in the country,” Toriola said. Despite the challenges, Toriola expressed optimism that regulators would make the right decision, taking into account the realities of the sector. The CEO emphasised that the focus is on ensuring the long-term sustainability of the industry, rather than short-term profitability. “I believe we’re all on the same side, the policymakers, the regulators, our Chairman of ALTON, Gbenga Adebayo, and the industry. We’re united because we share concerns about a few fundamental issues. First, human rights, are critical to driving any economy. Without a sustainable industry, the broader economy and the well-being of the people will be negatively impacted.” The proposal comes amid rising costs for telecom companies, driven by factors such as inflation, exchange rate fluctuations, and the increasing price of key operational inputs like diesel, power generation, and raw materials. Toriola highlighted the pressure these rising costs have put on telecom businesses, making it difficult for many companies to maintain profitable operations. Earlier this week, operators issued a statement warning that service disruptions are imminent unless tariffs are adjusted to account for escalating operational costs. The Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria, Engr. Gbenga Adebayo described the telecom sector as “under siege,” citing soaring operational costs driven by inflation, volatile exchange rates, and rising energy prices. He noted that despite these challenges, tariffs have remained unchanged, leaving operators struggling to maintain quality service and expand their networks. The telcom chief warned that without an immediate tariff adjustment, operators may resort to service shedding, leading to limited availability of telecom services in certain areas. The first call for a tariff adjustment was made in April 2024, but no significant progress has been achieved. In response to the growing financial strain, ALTON and the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria issued a joint statement urging the Federal Government to facilitate a constructive dialogue with industry stakeholders. The associations emphasised the need for a framework that balances consumer affordability with operators’ financial sustainability, following 11 years of tariff stability. With a shared commitment to preserving the sector’s future, operators are calling on all stakeholders to act before it’s too late, warning that failure to do so will risk the survival of one of Nigeria’s most critical industries. One Dies In Tesla Cybertruck Explosion Near Trump Hotel In Las Vegas

A Tesla Cybertruck exploded outside a hotel belonging to the United States President-elect, Donald Trump, in Las Vegas, killing at least one person and wounding seven, police said Wednesday. US President Joe Biden said authorities were investigating any links between the Las Vegas explosion and an attack earlier Wednesday in New Orleans, where a truck ploughed into a crowd of New Year’s revellers, killing at least 15. However, Biden cautioned that no such links had yet been found. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and local law enforcement said they believed the Tesla blast was an isolated incident, but they were investigating whether it was an “act of terrorism.” The electric vehicle—made by the company owned by Trump’s backer, Elon Musk—pulled up to the Trump International Hotel’s glass entrance before a “large explosion,” Las Vegas Sheriff Kevin McMahill told reporters. Video footage shows the stainless steel truck parked at the hotel entrance before bursting into flames, followed by smaller explosions that appeared similar to fireworks. McMahill said there was “one deceased individual inside the Cybertruck,” while seven people received “minor” injuries. He said the hotel had been evacuated. He told a later news conference that the back of the truck contained gasoline and camping fuel canisters, as well as “large firework mortars.” McMahill also said the fact that it was a Cybertruck “really limited the damage… because it had most of the blast go up through the truck and out,” noting that the glass doors of the hotel, just a few feet away, “were not even broken by that blast.” Biden said authorities were probing “any possible connection with the attack in New Orleans.” “Thus far, there’s nothing to report on that score,” he said. FBI agent Jeremy Schwartz described the Las Vegas blast as “an isolated incident.” He said that an FBI joint terrorism task force was investigating with two main goals — to confirm the identity of the “subject involved in this incident” and to determine “whether this was an act of terrorism or not.” – Concerns over Trump-Musk link – There had been indications that the suspect in the New Orleans attack had been inspired by the Islamic State group, Biden said. McMahill said they had “no indication” so far that the blast in Las Vegas had any similar links to the jihadist group. However, he added: “It’s a Tesla truck, and we know Elon Musk is working with President-elect Trump, and it’s the Trump Tower.” “So there are things to be concerned about there and that’s something we continue to look at,” McMahill said. Musk, who backed Trump in the November election and was named by the Republican to head up a commission to trim government spending, said in a post on his social media platform X that the explosion was “unrelated to the vehicle itself.” He said earlier the “whole Tesla senior team” was investigating the blast, adding: “We’ve never seen anything like this.” The truck had been rented in Colorado through the carsharing company Turo, police said — the same app that was used to rent the vehicle in the New Orleans attack McMahill said that was a “coincidence… that we have to continue to look into.” A spokesperson for the app, used by millions of people in the United States, said they were working with law enforcement, but that neither renter “had a criminal background that would have identified them as a security threat.” AFP

Court Orders Detention Of Activist Shehu Mahdi Over Fake French Military Base Claim

A chief magistrate court sitting in Kaduna on Tuesday ordered the remand in the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Kaduna, of self-styled activist and public commentator, Shehu Mahdi. Mahdi was arrested a few days ago by officers of the Department of State Services after he rebuffed pleas to pull down inciting videos he posted online claiming that President Bola Tinubu granted France the approval to set up a military base in northern Nigeria. Mahdi’s narrative came on the heels of a related claim by the military leader of Niger Republic, Abdourahamane Tchiani, that France set up a military base in northern Nigeria. Mahdi blamed Tinubu for endorsing the deal in a viral tweet. Both Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and Minister of Information, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, have since debunked the claims as baseless. On Tuesday, the DSS arraigned Mahdi before Magistrate Abubakar Lamido on a two-count charge of conspiracy, aiding and abetting terrorism, which the agency said is contrary to Section 26(2)(3) of the Terrorism (Prevention & Prohibition) Act, 2022 and Inciting Public Disturbances Contrary to Section 78 of the Penal Code Law of Kaduna State, 2017. “In his ruling, Magistrate Lamido held that Mahdi remains in a correctional facility in Kaduna until January 14, 2025, for further hearing on the matter,” a statement made available by the DSS read. The video clips posted by Mahdi have since been fact-checked by several media organisations, including Daily Trust and The Cable, and found to be 2013 video footages of Nigerian soldiers at Bamako Airport, Mali, during their deployment for an African Union Peacekeeping Mission in Northern Mali.
