Obi Decries N700,000 Fee Imposed On Anambra Traders

Former Anambra State Governor, Mr Peter Obi, has condemned the alleged demand of ₦700,000 from traders to reopen their shops at the Onitsha Head Bridge Market, describing the action as “insensitive” and calling on authorities to reconsider the charge. Obi, in a statement released on Tuesday via X, recalled his earlier visit to the market during the initial phase of its closure. He said he had stood in solidarity with regulatory authorities, including the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, in their efforts to rid society of fake drugs and counterfeit goods. “I recall visiting the Head Bridge Market during the initial phase of its closure, standing in support of the authorities to ensure our society is free from fake drugs and counterfeit goods,” Obi stated. He explained that his support was based on the understanding that investigations would be conducted quickly and the market reopened in a timely manner to reduce the hardship on small business owners, many of whom are already struggling under Nigeria’s current economic climate. “It is, therefore, deeply unfortunate to learn that shop owners are now being asked to pay ₦700,000 to reopen their stores,” he said. Obi expressed concern over the impact of such charges on small and medium-scale enterprises, pointing out that more than seven million Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises have collapsed in Nigeria in the past two years. “Our MSME’s businesses are at a ‘we can’t breathe’ stage, and the very system that should be offering them oxygen to support their breathing is instead suffocating them,” he said. He described the demand for such payment as a form of “economic sabotage” and urged relevant authorities to reconsider the decision in the interest of justice and economic recovery. “These shop owners have already endured prolonged closures, mounting unpaid bills, and economic strain. Adding further burdens to them and their families at this time is simply unjust,” Obi added. Reiterating his earlier position, the former presidential candidate said, “Let us prioritise compassion, economic recovery, and the survival of our small businesses at this critical time in our nation.” He appealed to the authorities once more, saying, “Please review and drop this charge. Allow these businesses to reopen. Compassion must lie at the root of government action.” Punch

Eight Abducted WASSCE Students, 11 Others Freed In Rivers

Nineteen people, including eight students sitting for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, have been rescued after being kidnapped by suspected pirates. The victims were held for 21 days in the Bille waterways area in the Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State. They were freed on Monday evening by a local security group known as the Royal Fouchee Security Services, also called the Amama Soldiers. The group is led by Asari-Dokubo, a former militant leader and now the traditional ruler of the Torusaramapiri community in Degema. The victims were kidnapped on May 6, when pirates attacked two boats heading to Bille. Everyone in the boats was taken, including the students. After the attack, there were many calls for their release. The kidnappers later contacted families and demanded N100 million in ransom. Speaking about the rescue, Asari-Dokubo said he and his team began the operation on Sunday after being asked to help by the Department of State Services. He also said that one of the victims had earlier paid N10 million to the kidnappers but later helped them locate the hideout. “These people were kept in terrible conditions for 21 days. They were starved and badly treated. One of them, who was released after paying N10 million, helped us find the kidnappers’ camp,” he said. Asari-Dokubo also raised concerns about a missing soldier, Lance Corporal Salihu Ibrahim, who was in one of the boats. Only his uniform and ID card were found, and he fears the soldier may have been killed. One of the suspects arrested, named Victor Friday, claimed he didn’t take part in the kidnapping. He said he only stayed in the camp and was used to running errands. He named a man called Kentebe from Bayelsa State as the leader of the gang, who is now on the run. A rescued victim, Victor Akinloye, who was also a boat driver, said they were beaten, stripped naked, and their phones and ATM cards were taken. The kidnappers also withdrew money from their accounts. Akinloye said he recognised the area where they were held. A few days later, he helped lead the rescue team to the location. When contacted, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the rescue. “Yes, I can confirm they were rescued on Monday evening through a joint effort by the police and the local security group,” Iringe-Koko said. I’m Prepared To Lead Madrid To Success, Says Xabi Alonso

New Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso declared on Monday that he possesses the energy and enthusiasm to deliver success befitting the Spanish giants as he was officially presented as Carlo Ancelotti’s successor. Alonso, who has signed a three-year contract until June 2028, will lead the team at the Club World Cup this summer, following Ancelotti’s departure to manage the Brazil national team. Madrid endured a trophyless season, losing their La Liga title to rivals Barcelona, who also defeated them in the Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup finals. The club’s European ambitions were also dashed by a heavy Champions League quarter-final defeat to Arsenal. “We have fantastic players and a team brimming with potential, capable of both a strong present and a promising future,” Alonso said at Real Madrid’s training ground. “That gives me every reason to come here full of energy and hope, aiming to bring out the best in every player and build a great team. “I am convinced that we can achieve great things, worthy of Real Madrid and all the European Cups and accomplishments amassed over so many years.” Alonso, a technically gifted central midfielder during his playing career, made 236 appearances for Madrid between 2009 and 2014, winning six trophies including the Champions League in his final season. That triumph marked Madrid’s 10th European Cup — La Décima — and the club has since added five more for a record 15 Champions League titles. The 43-year-old coach led Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten Bundesliga and German Cup double in the 2023-24 season, attracting attention from Europe’s elite clubs. Having been coached by managerial legends such as Ancelotti, Pep Guardiola, and José Mourinho, Alonso described the day as “special.” “It’s a day I will mark in my calendar for life,” he said. “Though I have been away for a few years, my connection with Madrid and the fans has never faded. “When I arrived at Valdebebas an hour and a half ago, it felt like a rebirth. I have the sense this is the start of a new era, as the president said.” ‘One of Our Own’ Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez welcomed Alonso back to the Spanish capital in an introductory speech. “This is a very special day for all who love Real Madrid. It marks the beginning of a new era filled with excitement and deep emotions,” Pérez said. “A coach has arrived who is among the best in the world and who understands what this badge and shirt represent. “Today, we welcome one of our own — Xabi Alonso. Welcome back home, Real Madrid.” Alonso, who also won the 2010 World Cup and two European Championships with Spain, began his coaching career after retiring from playing. Real Madrid’s Club World Cup campaign begins against Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal in Miami on 18 June, offering the first glimpse of Alonso’s project. AFP

The incidents, according to staff members of the aviation training school, occurred around 4:00 pm on Saturday. The unfortunate incident occurred during a simulated instrument approach on Runway 05 at the Ilorin International Airport. A simulated instrument approach, often referred to as simulated instrument flight is a kind of flight where a pilot flies using only the aircraft’s instruments for navigation and control. In place of instrument meteorological conditions, the pilot wears a view-limiting device, such as an IFR hood or goggles, which restricts their view of the outside environment. While no death was recorded in the incident, the two occupants of the aircraft have been hospitalized. At the time of this report, the state of the victims’ health cannot be ascertained. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau through a statement by the Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance,Mrs Bimbo Oladeji, said investigation has commenced into the root cause of the crash. Ex-APC Presidential Aspirant Berates NWC, Govs For Endorsing Tinubu

A former presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress in the 2019 election, Charles Udeogaranya, on Friday, berated the National Working Committee and governors elected on the platform of the APC for publicly endorsing President Bola Tinubu. Udeogaranya argued that failure to subject the President to a primary election in the same manner he clinched the party ticket in 2023, will inevitably rob other prospective aspirants of the opportunity to bring about a better Nigeria anchored on creativity, nationalism and prosperity. He voiced his concern in a statement issued to newsmen in Abuja, His reaction comes barely 24 hours after the 22 APC governors and the leadership of the party unanimously backed Tinubu as the party’s sole presidential candidate for the 2027 poll. The endorsement was announced on Thursday by the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, at the APC National Summit held at the State House Banquet Hall in Abuja. Uzodimma moved the motion for Tinubu’s adoption as the APC’s sole candidate, which was seconded by the PGF Vice Chairman, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State. Reacting, Udeogaranya insisted that there should be ‘no room for automatic tickets’ on the APC platform. “There is no room for consensus in continuous hunger, chronic poverty, economic quagmire, insecurity, nepotism, cluelessness and in the leadership of Nigeria. “Consensus is far from it. While I deeply and respectfully appreciate my fellow APC members on their Abuja summit, may I also respectfully inform you that this democracy was birthed by Thomas Jefferson in his declaration of the United States Independence in 1776. “His declaration, which was entrenched by Abraham Lincoln at his speech in Gettysburg 1863 and globally expressed by Martin Luther King Jnr in his Washington 1963 speech, will not fail in Nigeria, come 2027,” he fumed. Reacting, the Deputy National Organising Committee, Nze Chidi Duru, argued that the ruling party did the right thing. “The President has a right of first refusal. If he, however, declines the offer to run for a second term in office, we can then be talking about a primary,” he stated. Punch

AGF’s Office Blasts Atiku’s Aide Over False Allegations Of Pre-Defection Meetings

The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice has denied allegations suggesting that the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Solicitor General of the Federation met with some governors ahead of their defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress. The response followed claims made by Mr. Paul Ibe, spokesperson to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, during a recent interview on a national television station. Ibe had insinuated that both the EFCC chairman and the Solicitor General met with a former and a serving governor from the South-South region 48 hours before they decamped to the APC. Though Ibe did not mention specific names, the Office of the AGF described the insinuation as “contemptuous” and “false,” urging the public to disregard the statement. The Special Assistant to the President on Communication and Publicity, Office of the AGF, Kamarudeen Ogundele, in a statement on Friday, said the allegation was described as “from the pit of hell.” “We wish to state categorically that the allegation is from the pit of hell, and at best, a figment of imagination of Mr. Ibe,” the statement read. Ogundele further asserted that, “We know as a fact that the EFCC chairman and the Solicitor General of the Federation never met any serving or former governor as alleged by him.” He maintained that the statement made by Ibe was an attempt to discredit the anti-corruption drive of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. “We appeal to the members of the public to disregard the insinuation as it was a feeble attempt to discredit President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led administration’s fight against corruption,” he said. The Office of the AGF reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and pursuing justice without political interference. “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration will continue to uphold the rule of law and will not falter in the fight against corruption no matter whose ox is gored,” Ogundele added.
