Nigerian Dies After Being Detained at Indian Railway Station

A Nigerian citizen has died following his detention and questioning by officials of the Railway Protection Force at Surat Railway Station in India, prompting the Government Railway Police to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. The man, whose identity was not disclosed, was travelling from Mumbai to Delhi on the Golden Temple Express when he was detained at Surat following an alleged altercation with fellow passengers, according to a report by The Indian Express on Thursday. Police said the incident began on August 17 after a passenger contacted the railway helpline, 139, to report that the Nigerian national and another passenger were allegedly fighting near one of the train’s gates. The Nigerian allegedly sprayed a fire extinguisher at co-passengers during the altercation while the train was travelling between Vapi and Surat stations, police sources said. He was subsequently detained at Surat and taken to the RPF office for questioning, where he reportedly collapsed. He was rushed to the Surat Municipal Institute of Medical Education and Research Hospital, “where doctors declared him dead on arrival.” The Surat GRP has registered a case of “accidental death”, while the post-mortem examination conducted on August 18 was awaiting its report as of Wednesday evening, according to the report. Western Railway Superintendent of Police, Abhay Soni, said preliminary findings indicated that the deceased was a Nigerian national who lived in Vasai, Mumbai. “After primary investigations, it is believed that the deceased was a Nigerian national. When Surat RPF caught him, he didn’t have any of his identity cards with him,” Soni told The Indian Express. Soni also disclosed that the man had previously been arrested twice by police in Mumbai in connection with cocaine trafficking cases. “He lived in Vasai (Mumbai) and was arrested twice by Malwani and Malad police in Mumbai for drug (cocaine) trafficking cases in 2018,” he said. The police officer said the purpose of the Nigerian’s trip to Delhi remained under investigation and confirmed that he had boarded the train from Borivali in Mumbai. Soni said the GRP had commenced an inquiry into the death, with statements expected from officers involved in the detention and those present at the RPF office. “We have started an inquiry. Statements from the police officials who caught him and those present at the police station will be taken. We are also waiting for the autopsy report,” he said. The investigation into the death is being conducted by Deputy Superintendent of Police D H Gaur.

Circular Road Will Boost Development Across Six LGs — Oyo Acting Governor; Gives Update on Compensation, Commissioning

Acting Governor, Barr. Abdul-Raheem Adebayo Lawal, has said the ongoing circular road project will drive development across six local government areas in the Ibadan metropolis, including Oluyole, Ido, Egbeda, Ona-Ara, Lagelu and Akinyele. He stated this on Monday while addressing journalists after inspecting the ongoing Phase 2 of the 110-kilometre Senator Rashidi Ladoja Circular Road in Ibadan. Barr. Lawal said the inspection was to assess the pace and quality of work to ensure the project meets approved specifications. According to him, about 32km of dual carriageway has been completed and asphalted, with streetlights and toll gates already installed. He said: “This is still an ongoing project. We are doing a 110km road, and with dualization, that’s 220km. By the grace of God, we will complete it before the exit of this administration. “The whole essence of this inspection is to let our people know that the circular road is a mega project this state has not witnessed in a long time, both in old and present Oyo State. “People must know that the circular road is about the development of Oyo State, not the speculation that Governor Seyi Makinde is taking people’s land. I have come to establish the fact that this project is not about taking anybody’s land. It’s about the development of this city.” The Acting Governor however assured that arrangements have been made for compensation for affected landowners who have registered. According to him, no inch of land acquired through this project will be left uncompensated. As long as our people get registered, all lands affected by the project will be compensated. He added that funds for compensation would be released very soon once cost figures are collated and submitted. While urging residents to get proper information about the project instead of spreading falsehoods, the Acting Governor stated, “It is important for our people to go round and see the project for themselves. It speaks for itself,”. He noted that the circular road now covers six LGAs previously referred to as “less city” but now part of a “greater city” due to the Makinde administration’s infrastructure drive. “This is good for development, investment and social cohesion,” he said. Barr. Lawal disclosed that contractors have assured that the 32km section at Badeku will be completed by the end of September and ready for commissioning. Adding that Work on hydraulic bridges has also been completed, while clearance is ongoing for the next stage, the Acting Governor said: “The goal is that before the exit of this administration, we would have completed Phase 2”. He equally described the circular road as a world-class project equipped with facilities including lay-bys, toll gates, and a medical bay. The Acting Governor also inspected ongoing projects at the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport, Ibadan, which are expected to be completed by November. He was accompanied on the inspection by the Commissioner for Works and Transport, Hon. Magbonjubola Jagaban’, and other government officials.

La Liga: Barcelona Sign Rodri from Manchester City

Spain’s World Cup-winning captain, Rodri, has expressed his eagerness to “feel that excitement again” after officially completing his transfer from Premier League giants Manchester City to Barcelona on Tuesday. In a statement on their website, the La Liga champions said the 30-year-old has signed a deal that will run until 2030, bringing an end to one of the longest-running transfer sagas of the summer. After two failed bids, Barca and Man City reached a deal on Sunday, which a source from the English club told AFP would go up to 76.5 million euros ($88.6 million), including bonuses. Rodri then arrived in the Catalan capital the following day to thresh out personal terms with his new club. “I’m very happy and excited about this new stage in my career,” Rodri said during his unveiling on Tuesday. “It’s a fresh challenge, a chance to experience new things and feel that excitement again.” After seven trophy-laden years at Man City, the former Atletico Madrid and Villarreal player was reported to be close to joining Real Madrid, before finally opting for their arch-rivals. The midfielder has struggled with injuries over the past two seasons but shone as Spain won their second World Cup in North America last month. Despite Barca’s recent dominance of La Liga, they have failed to lift European club football’s biggest trophy since 2015, when the club’s star-studded attack of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez fired them to their fifth Champions League title. “It’s a pleasure to be at Barca. I’ll give 100 percent of everything I have,” Rodri said. “I’m here to compete for everything, for big things like the Champions League. “I’ve come to a hugely ambitious club that really suits my personality, so I’ll try to help in every way I can to achieve our objectives this season.” To help him achieve these goals is a Camp Nou dressing room replete with familiar faces from Rodri’s Euro 2024 and World Cup successes with Spain, including Lamine Yamal, Pedri and Dani Olmo. He will also join up with new teammates, widemen Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, after the pair joined Barcelona earlier in the close season. One of Pep Guardiola’s most trusted lieutenants at City, Rodri said he believed his new coach at Barcelona, Hansi Flick, would “bring a lot to my career”. “(Flick has) a style that I think is somewhat different from what I’ve experienced before, so it will be enriching and help me grow as a player,” he added. Rodri was a vital figure for Guardiola during their time together at the Etihad Stadium, leading City to the 2023 Champions League and four Premier League titles among 12 major trophies. “I am leaving the club with a huge sense of pride about what we have achieved and gratitude too for so many amazing memories,” Rodri said in a statement on City’s website. “What we have done together in these years is something both very special and unforgettable.” AFP

Nigerian National Arrested in Vietnam with Meth and Heroin

A Nigerian national has been arrested in Vietnam after authorities reportedly discovered 2kg of suspected crystal methamphetamine and two suspected bricks of heroin hidden in a shipment from Laos. VietnamPlus reported on Monday that the drugs were discovered at the Lao Bao International Border Gate in Quang Tri Province after customs officers detected suspicious images in a consigned package during a scan. The report said the case was uncovered at about 8:30 pm on August 5 when customs officers were inspecting road vehicles entering Vietnam from Laos through the border gate. “Customs officers detected suspicious images in a consigned package using scanning equipment,” the report stated. A subsequent physical inspection reportedly revealed that the drugs had been concealed inside electric water heaters and electronic components “used as disguises.” The discovery raised suspicions of transnational drug trafficking, prompting the Customs Sub-Department of Region IX to assign its customs control team to lead the investigation. The team also coordinated with the Lao Bao International Border Gate’s customs branch, the drug-related crimes investigation police division under the Quang Tri Police, the anti-smuggling investigation sub-department and the provincial Border Guard. According to the report, the agencies worked together “to identify and locate the recipient” of the consignment. “After several days of tracing the consignment across multiple locations,” law enforcement officers arrested Izuchukwu Calistus Odionye, a Nigerian national born in 1983, on August 9 in Ho Chi Minh City while he was receiving the package. The suspect reportedly admitted that the package contained drugs. Odionye told investigators that he “had been hired to receive it in Ho Chi Minh City and transport it to Hanoi,” according to the report. The Vietnamese authorities have since expanded the investigation to identify other people allegedly involved in the case. “The investigation has been expanded to identify other people involved,” the report added.

Xenophobia: 83 More Nigerians Set to Return from South Africa on Wednesday

The Federal Government has announced the arrival of another 83 Nigerian nationals evacuated from South Africa amid growing Afrophobic attacks and rising anti-foreigner sentiments in the country. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement issued on Monday and signed by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, said the returnees were expected to arrive at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on Wednesday, August 19, 2026. According to the ministry, the returnees will depart Oliver Tambo Airport, Johannesburg, at 3:35pm local time aboard South African Airways and are expected to arrive in Lagos at approximately 8:45pm the same day. The ministry said the latest evacuation was facilitated through the intervention and sponsorship of air tickets by public-spirited private individuals. “The Ministry wishes to note that this latest cohort of returnees is facilitated through the kind intervention and sponsorship of tickets by public-spirited private individuals, whose generosity the Federal Government acknowledges with profound gratitude,” the statement said. The development followed the conclusion of the government’s voluntary repatriation programme, under which nearly 1,490 Nigerians were repatriated from South Africa amid concerns over attacks and discrimination against foreigners. The ministry said the Federal Government, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, remained committed to protecting the welfare and dignity of Nigerians at home and abroad. It said the government’s Citizen Diplomacy agenda viewed Nigerians in the diaspora “not as a burden, but as critical assets for national development,” adding that it was committed to ensuring their protection and well-being. The ministry also commended the private individuals and philanthropists who supported the latest evacuation, describing their intervention as an example of the “whole-of-society approach” being promoted by the government. “The Ministry commends their patriotism and selflessness, which have significantly alleviated the plight of our compatriots in South Africa,” the statement said. The FG called on the organised private sector, corporate organisations, state governments and other well-meaning Nigerians at home and abroad to emulate the initiative and support government efforts to respond to consular emergencies. The ministry further said the government would continue to strengthen diplomatic engagement with South Africa to address the root causes of Afrophobia and prevent attacks and discrimination against Nigerians. “The government remains committed to deepening strategic partnerships with host nations, including South Africa, to address the root causes of Afrophobia and ensure that such acts of violence and discrimination against Nigerians are prevented and are strongly condemned when they occur, including holding perpetrators of such violence to account,” it stated. The ministry expressed appreciation to the private sponsors for their support and urged broader collaboration to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to protect its citizens abroad.

UK Mission Commends Osun Voters, Calls for Lessons from Election

The British High Commission has praised Osun State residents for their peaceful conduct during the August 15 governorship election and congratulated Governor Ademola Adeleke on securing a second term. In a statement issued on Monday, the High Commission said it deployed accredited observers to monitor the election after engaging with various stakeholders ahead of the poll. It said its observations, which were consistent with findings by credible independent observer groups with wider deployments across the state, showed several encouraging signs of a positive democratic process. The commission said, “This includes the opening of polls as scheduled in many locations, the commitment of security personnel to maintaining order, and the effective implementation of electoral procedures by INEC officials.” It particularly commended voters for their “patience, resilience and participation” throughout the election. However, the British High Commission noted reports of isolated incidents that generated tension before and during the election, as well as the continued challenge of voter interference, including vote-buying across party lines. It also raised concerns over access to polling facilities for persons with disabilities and elderly voters, as well as overcrowding linked to the speed and limited provision of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System devices for accreditation. The commission urged relevant institutions to review the identified challenges and draw lessons from the election to improve future electoral processes. “We encourage the relevant institutions to review these issues carefully and to draw lessons – including from the recommendations of credible organisations like the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room – that strengthen public confidence, transparency and accountability,” it said. Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, the commission noted that off-cycle elections benefited from additional personnel and resources that could be more difficult to replicate during nationwide polls. It nevertheless expressed hope that the Osun election would contribute to further improvements in Nigeria’s electoral system. “We nevertheless hope that the experience of the Osun election will help inform further improvements that strengthen the integrity, inclusiveness and credibility of future electoral processes,” the commission said. The United Kingdom reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s electoral institutions, civil society and other partners in promoting peaceful, transparent, inclusive and credible elections to strengthen the democratic institutions that underpin them.

FG Loan: How to Apply for Funds to Build or Buy a House

The Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria provides eligible Nigerians with mortgage financing through the National Housing Fund, enabling them to purchase, construct, upgrade or renovate homes. The NHF Mortgage Loan is currently available to contributors at an interest rate of 6 per cent per annum, with repayment of up to 30 years. According to FMBN on its website, the current information shows that eligible contributors can access up to ₦50 million, subject to affordability and the value of the property. Here are the key things applicants should know about the scheme and how to apply. What is the FMBN mortgage loan? The NHF Mortgage Loan is a housing finance facility administered by FMBN through accredited and licensed Primary Mortgage Banks (PMBs). The facility can be used to buy, build, improve or renovate an owner-occupied home. The property being financed serves as security for the loan. Unlike a conventional commercial mortgage, the NHF facility is designed to provide contributors with longer repayment periods and a concessionary interest rate. Who is eligible? Applicants generally have to meet the following conditions: <span;><span;>* Be a Nigerian citizen aged 18 or above. <span;><span;>* Be a contributor to the National Housing Fund. <span;><span;>* Have made continuous NHF contributions for at least six months. <span;><span;>* Have a stable source of income or, for self-employed applicants, provide evidence of regular income. <span;><span;>* Apply through an FMBN-accredited and licensed mortgage loan originator/Primary Mortgage Bank. <span;><span;>* Have a property that meets the relevant legal and planning requirements. FMBN also states that loan repayment affordability is assessed using a maximum of one-third of the applicant’s income. How much can you borrow? FMBN’s current NHF Mortgage Loan page says a contributor can access up to ₦50 million, subject to affordability and other lending conditions. The property also matters. FMBN’s published conditions state that an individual should not receive more than 90 per cent of the cost or value of the property being mortgaged. The older ₦15 million figure still appears in some FMBN documents and online guides, but FMBN’s current product page now states ₦50 million. Applicants should therefore rely on the latest terms provided by FMBN and their accredited mortgage institution. What is the interest rate? The interest rate for NHF contributors is not more than 6 per cent per annum. FMBN currently describes the facility as being provided to accredited PMBs at 4 per cent for onward lending to NHF contributors at 6 per cent. How long do you have to repay? The maximum repayment period is 30 years, subject to factors including the applicant’s age, income and years in service. Repayments are made through the mortgage loan originator through which the applicant obtained the loan. How to apply 1. Confirm your NHF contribution You must first be registered as an NHF contributor and have made the required continuous contributions. FMBN now provides an online personal/individual NHF registration portal for new contributors. 2. Choose an accredited mortgage institution Applicants do not simply walk into FMBN and collect the mortgage loan directly. The application is made through a licensed and FMBN-accredited Primary Mortgage Bank/mortgage loan originator, which processes the application and submits it to FMBN. 3. Obtain the mortgage application form The mortgage institution will provide the relevant application form and guide you on the documentation required for your particular application. 4. Prepare your documents Depending on the nature of the application, applicants may be required to provide documents such as: <span;><span;>* Completed mortgage loan application form; <span;><span;>* Evidence of NHF contribution; <span;><span;>* Proof of income; <span;><span;>* Recent payslips or other income evidence; <span;><span;>* Property title documents; <span;><span;>* Valuation report for the property; <span;><span;>* Bill of quantities where the loan is for construction; <span;><span;>* Relevant tax and employment documents; and <span;><span;>* Other legal documents required by the mortgage institution. The exact documentation can vary depending on whether the applicant is buying, building or renovating a property. 5. Submit the application The application and supporting documents are submitted to the accredited mortgage institution. The institution assesses the applicant’s income, repayment capacity, property and documentation before forwarding the application to FMBN where applicable. 6. Property and legal checks The property is subjected to valuation and legal checks. FMBN’s conditions require the mortgaged property to provide adequate security and comply with relevant planning and legal requirements. 7. Approval and disbursement Once the relevant conditions are satisfied and the loan is approved, the funds are disbursed through the mortgage loan originator for the approved housing purpose. What can the loan be used for? The NHF Mortgage Loan can be used to: <span;><span;>* Buy a residential property; <span;><span;>* Build a home; <span;><span;>* Improve an existing home; or <span;><span;>* Renovate an existing home. FMBN specifically describes its NHF facility as covering these housing purposes. How can Nigerians check their NHF contributions? FMBN provides digital channels through which contributors can access information about their NHF accounts. The Bank’s website also provides online registration and account services for contributors. Important warning for applicants Applicants should be careful of individuals who claim they can “secure” an FMBN loan in exchange for money. FMBN’s official website carries warnings about fraudsters posing as NHF facilitation officers. Applicants should deal only with FMBN and its accredited mortgage institutions and verify any request for payment before proceeding. FMBN’s official website provides information on its mortgage products, NHF services and application channels. Apply Here: https://fmbn.gov.ng/products/nhf_mortgage_loan

Court Remands Former NBA Chairman in DSS Custody

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday ordered the remand of former Chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Shendam branch, Plateau State, Gabriel Nkup Tsenyen, in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), pending a ruling on the propriety of his fresh arraignment. Justice Joyce Abdulmalik fixed August 20 to determine whether Tsenyen, who is also a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Plateau State, can be tried afresh over allegations of cyberstalking and incitement of public disturbances. The development followed an attempt by the DSS to arraign the lawyer on a fresh two-count charge bordering on cyberstalking and incitement to breach public peace. But shortly after Tsenyen was called into the dock to take his plea, his lead counsel, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Emmanuel Esene, objected to the arraignment. Esene told the court that his client had already been arraigned before the same court on the same allegations and that the earlier case had been adjourned until September 28 for trial. He consequently urged the court not to allow the fresh arraignment, arguing that doing so could expose his client to double jeopardy. However, counsel for the DSS, Muinat Oladunjoye, who appeared for the prosecution from the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, said she was unaware of any previous charge against Tsenyen. Following the conflicting positions, Justice Abdulmalik requested a copy of the earlier charge from the defence. Esene produced the document before the court. The judge subsequently requested the record of proceedings in the earlier case to enable her determine whether Tsenyen had indeed been arraigned on the same allegations. The defence, however, said it could not produce the record immediately because the fresh charge had come as a surprise to them on Thursday, August 13. Justice Abdulmalik then ordered that the record of proceedings in the earlier trial be produced on August 20. Pending the production and examination of the record, the judge ordered that Tsenyen be remanded at the DSS detention facility. The fresh charge was filed by the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Rotimi Iseoluwa Oyedepo. In the first count, the prosecution alleged that Tsenyen, sometime in May 2026, sent a malicious publication on the Ngootuguut local community WhatsApp platform alleging that the entire community was involved in a plot to eliminate him. The prosecution alleged that he knew the publication to be false and sent it “for the purpose of causing annoyance, insult, criminal intimidation, enmity, hatred, ill will and needless anxiety” in the community. The alleged offence was said to be contrary to and punishable under Section 24(1) of the Cybercrimes (Prevention, Prohibition, etc.) Act, 2015, as amended. In count two, the prosecution alleged that the lawyer sent the same publication “with intent to incite or cause breach to public peace.” The alleged offence was said to be contrary to and punishable under Section 114 of the Penal Code Act, 2004. The court will on August 20 determine, among other things, whether the fresh charges relate to allegations for which Tsenyen had previously been arraigned and whether the proposed fresh trial is legally permissible
