Gov Abiodun’s Intervention Sought By Ogun Youth Group To Resolve AMORAN Leadership Dispute, Ensure Peace

The concerned youths in Ogun State under the aegis of Ogun Youth Arise (OYA) has called on Governor Dapo Abiodun to wade in the crisis rocking the leadership of Articulated Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria (AMORAN) to avert looming danger in the state. The coalition of concerned youth organizations, community leaders, and progressive minds across the state on Saturday during a Press Conference held in Ibadan, the Capital City of Oyo State compelled the Governor to intervene before it is too late in order to further ensure stability, safety of lives and properties of residents of Ogun State. While voicing their deep concerns over the unfolding crisis within the leadership of the Articulated Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria (AMORAN), particularly under the current executive led by Hon. Taofeek Danku, the National Coordinator of the group, Ambassador Abdulraman Demola noted that it is high time Governor Dapo Abiodun take a decisive action over the lingering leadership tusse in AMORAN under the present leadership of Hon. Taofeek Danku. Ambassador Abdulraman Demola further noted that AMORAN under the current leadership poses a clear and present danger to the peace and stability of Ogun State. Abdulraman said, “It is no longer news that the state has, in recent times, witnessed pockets of unrest fueled by dissatisfaction within the transport sector, particularly among commercial riders who now feel disconnected from the leadership that ought to be their voice. The once-structured association, which played a critical role in stabilizing the transport sector under previous leadership, is now embroiled in avoidable chaos, causing tension in different parts of Ogun State.

Nigerian radio personality, Chinedu Emmanuel, popularly known as Nedu Wazobia has stepped down from The Honest Bunch Podcast amid growing controversy involving social commentator, Martins Vincent Otse, also known as Verydarkman. The controversy begun after reality star Deeone who appeared on the Honest Bunch Podcast alleged that Verydarkman had an interest in men. However, instead of responding directly to the claim, Verydarkman redirected his focus to Nedu, revealing private conversations and making allegations about the women Nedu had supposedly been involved with. ‘Free My Son,’ 2face Mother Begs Edo Lawmaker, Natasha Osawuru

Rose Idibia, the mother of veteran singer Innocent, popularly known as 2face, has raised the alarm that Nigerians should help her beg Edo State lawmaker, Natasha Osawuru, to leave her son. She made the appeal in a video that went viral on Thursday evening. According to Mrs Idibia, 2face is presently not in his right frame of mind due to the divorce proceedings with his estranged wife, Annie. “Good evening, Nigerians. My name is Mrs Rose Idibia, the mother of 2face. This message is for Miss Natasha Osawaru of Edo State. I’m calling on all mothers in Nigeria to help me beg her to free my son. “My son is going through a divorce process, and he is clearly not in his right senses now. I know my son well. That is not him. “Please Natasha, the beads you put on his hand and on his neck, remove them and free him,” she said. The PUNCH reports a viral video on Thursday that captured the moment 2face proposed to Osawaru. In the video, the singer and the lawmaker were seen dancing together to the admiration of some of their friends. 2face later proceeded to present Osawaru with a ring, after which they were locked in a long embrace. This comes just a day after the musician publicly confirmed his romantic relationship with Osawaru, setting social media abuzz. The revelation follows his recent separation from his wife, Annie Idibia, with the singer expressing his intention to take things further with Osawaru. Speculations about their relationship had been growing after 2face was seen at the Edo State Assembly and a video surfaced showing the two together at a Lagos club. Addressing the rumours, the African Queen crooner took to Instagram on Tuesday to set the record straight. In the video, he said in part, “Allegedly, I have seen so many things, so many people coming up with their own false narratives and malicious nonsense after I posted that stuff that I posted. Yes, I posted what I posted. “Hon. Natasha has been dragged, she has been called all sorts of names, she has been labelled as a home breaker. “She is a young, brilliant, amazing woman, and she had nothing to do with what is happening between me and Annie in our marriage. Yes, I love her. She is amazing, and she is cool. I want to marry her.” Osawaru is a politician and member of the Edo State House of Assembly representing the Egor Constituency under the Peoples Democratic Party. She was elected in April 2023 and is from the Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. Punch

Missing Rifles: IG Urges Senate To Conduct Closed-Door Investigation

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has urged the Nigerian Senate to conduct a closed-door investigation into the alleged disappearance of 3,907 assault rifles. He cited security concerns as the reason for the request. The police chief also dismissed the 2019 audit report by the Auditor-General for the Federation, which claimed that thousands of rifles were missing or unaccounted for in the police armoury as of January 2020. In a letter addressed to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, on Thursday, Egbetokun expressed appreciation for the Senate’s commitment to a thorough investigation. The letter, read after the passage of the 2025 budget, came 48 hours after a public hearing in which police officials struggled to provide satisfactory responses to the Auditor-General’s report on missing firearms. The IGP, who was present at the hearing, later excused himself due to pressing national duties. However, he strongly objected to the public scrutiny of the police, arguing that such sensitive issues should not be discussed openly. Egbetokun urged lawmakers to allow the police time to conduct internal investigations into the matter. He also appealed to the Senate leadership to ensure that future hearings on national security issues are held privately to prevent misinterpretation and potential security risks. “We appreciate the Senate committee’s probe into the alleged missing firearms and urge the committee to conduct future hearings on sensitive security issues in camera so that the wrong impression is not created in the minds of Nigerians and the international community,” the letter read. “Conducting hearings on these sensitive security issues behind closed doors will help prevent misinformation, protect national security interests, and allow for more candid discussions and fact-finding.” Akpabio acknowledged the IGP’s concerns, confirming that investigations would be conducted both internally by the police and externally by the Senate. Meanwhile, Senate Deputy Whip, Onyechachi Nwoebonyi (APC, Ebonyi North), who presided over the Senate Public Accounts Committee hearing in the absence of Chairman Aliyu Wadada, urged the police chief to reappear on Monday, February 17, with a more detailed explanation about the missing rifles. ‘Go To Hell,’ Ribadu Slams Canada For Denying Military Chiefs Visa

National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, has slammed the Canadian government over its decision to deny visas to Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and other top military officers. Ribadu, who spoke on Thursday at the maiden annual lecture of the National Association of the Institute for Security Studies in Abuja, described the visa snub as “disrespectful” and declared that Canada “can go to hell.” His reaction came after Gen Musa narrated how he and some senior military officers were denied entry into Canada for an official engagement. The CDS explained that the delegation had been invited to an event honouring war veterans but was left in limbo after the embassy denied visas to some of its members. “Every disappointment is a blessing. “Yesterday, I was meant to be in Canada for an event to honour our veterans—those injured in battle. We were invited along with our team, but while half of us got visas, the other half was denied. It’s very disappointing,” Musa said. He described the move as a wake-up call for Nigeria to strengthen its sovereignty. “This is a reminder that we must stand on our own, stand strong as a nation, and refuse to be taken for granted,” he added. Reacting to the development, Ribadu commended the CDS for publicly addressing the issue, insisting that Nigeria must focus on building its own strength rather than seeking validation from foreign nations. “Thank you for the courage to say Canada denied you visas. They can go to hell,” Ribadu declared. “Even though it’s painful and disrespectful, we are peaceful, we are strong, and I agree with you—it is time to fix our country. This is yet another reason we must work hard to make Nigeria work.”

Oyo Pensioners Hail Makinde For Restating Commitment To Retirees’ Welfare

Oyo Pensioners Hail Makinde For Restating Commitment To Retirees’ Welfare

IBADAN – Pensioners from all geopolitical zones of Oyo State, on Thursday, converged on the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, in their hundreds to appreciate the state governor for turning around their fortunes through the recent review of pensions in the state. The pensioners, under the aegis of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Oyo State Council, stated that the review has made Oyo State pensioners the highest paid state pensioners in the federation. This was as the NUP, South-West Zonal Council, also lauded Governor Makinde for the review of pensions, which led to the payment of N25,000 as minimum pension to the least paid pensioner, the factoring of 33 per cent pension increase of 2010, the consequential adjustment of 2019, 20 per cent of pension increase and part of N32,000 minimum wage across board for Oyo State pensioners. The South-West NUP, in a letter dated 12th February, 2025 and signed by its chairman Comrade Waidi Oloyede and secretary, Comrade Sunday Akin, expressed its gratitude to the governor. Speaking at the appreciation rally, the Secretary of the NUP, Oyo State Council, Comrade Olusegun Abatan, in a speech entitled “Resurrected Pensioners in Oyo State Appreciate Engr. Seyi Makinde” praised the governor for changing the plight of pensioners. He maintained that the governor started on a great note when he assumed office in 2019 by paying gratuities that were “criminally held down for a whole eight years,” started paying pensions on the 25th of every month and crowned the efforts with the latest review of pensions after all entreaties to previous administrations failed. He said: “16 years before you took over the mantle of government in Oyo State, pensioners had no government that was sympathetic and empathetic to their plights. Gratuities were not paid as and when due, pensions of those times were withheld or paid in instalments and all entreaties to the governments fell on deaf ears, resulting in massive deaths of our members. “At one point, Oyo State pensioners were referred to as dead people and in actual fact, we were dying like fowls afflicted by Newcastle disease. When you contested for the first term, we just wanted anybody that would liberate us from the shackles of death and we went ahead to vote enmasse for you. We did the same thing when you threw your hat into the ring for a second term. “You have not disappointed us. Our pensions became regular; you started paying our gratuities that were criminally held down for a whole eight years because we were alleged not to have voted for them. “During those locust years, extant provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) which stipulated that pensions should be increased were jettisoned outright by past administrations. This culminated in some of our members earning between N350-N1,000 as monthly pensions. All entreaties to those emperors fell on deaf ears. “The only respite we had was a token review of pensions 18 years ago, with increases in pensions from 2007 to 2019 sniggered at by past governors. Our union began its legitimate pressure for the implementation of pension increases when you became governor and you took time consulting widely on how to go about reviewing the stagnant pensions. “We know all bucks stop on your table and because we know you are kind, humane and compassionate to the pensioners, our letter to you struck humanity in you, resulting in your approval that the least paid pensioners in Oyo State should now earn N25,000 per month. “You didn’t stop there, you directed that all pension increases since 2007 be factored into the pensions of affected pensioners, culminating in unprecedented increase of pension of our members. This increase is unprecedented in the annals of pension review in Oyo State and the first of its kind in the whole of the federation.” In his response, Governor Makinde, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Barr. Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal, said that his government would continue to remain committed to the welfare of pensioners and improvement of their standard of living. The governor commended the pensioners and their leadership for showing gratitude to his government, stating that his government knows the importance of prioritising the welfare of pensioners, who had contributed 35 years of their lives to the development of the state during their active service years. He noted that in 2019, the gratuities and pension arrears owed by past administrations were to the tune of about N61 billion, but his government has been able to offset a huge chunk of the debt, declaring that the administration would offset the debt before the expiration of its second tenure in May 2027. He said: “Actually, what happened this morning was quite unprecedented in the sense that, in my experience, pensioners have never come to express appreciation to any government. “So, this is quite unprecedented and it is because of what this administration has done for them in terms of improving the welfare of pensioners in Oyo State. “You would have observed when Comrade Abatan indicated that before now, pensioners were receiving between N350 and N1,000 and that the last time a pension review was undertaken was during the administration of former Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala. Since then, there have not been improvements in their pensions until now. “What we did as an administration was to look at all the circumstances — socio-economic and others and to say, okay, what will be the living pension for our pensioners? So, we fixed what we consider as a living pension which, in fact, was enough averagely for our pensioners. “To that extent, they felt they must come and show appreciation. What they have done this morning was a testament of appreciation, which would also make the government look into other areas where they can have advantage.” In attendance at the appreciation rally were the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Olanike Adeyemo; Head of Service, Mrs Olubunmi Oni, mni; Commissioner for Establishment and Training, Hon. Segun Olayiwola; … Read more

MTN Apologises To Customers Over 200% Data Price Hike

Nigeria’s largest telecom operator, MTN, has issued a public apology to its customers following widespread complaints about a sudden 200% increase in the price of its popular 15GB data bundle. The price hike where internet subscribers will have to pay N6,000 for a 15GB weekly data plan which is a 200% increase from the previous N2,000, took many customers by surprise, and led to an outrage from customers on social media on Wednesday. In message shared on social media on Thursday, MTN in an informal, conversational tone acknowledged the frustration of its customers, and sought to address the growing discontent among users who had grown accustomed to the affordable rates previously offered. The message read, “To our 15G digital bundle lovers. You dey vex. We know. We know how upsetting it must have been to suddenly wake up to a 200% increase on your favourite digital bundle. “We could share several reasons, and provide explanations, but omo, all that one na story. We don cast. We get it and admit it. Let’s just say na mistake.” MTN continued the apology by urging customers not to stay angry saying, “In this love season, don’t stay angry with us. Please forgive and forget. You matter die and we will never stop showing you how much. Let’s continue our relationship. Thank you for your understanding.” For now, only MTN has increased prices, but Airtel and Globacom are expected to follow after the Nigerian Communications Commission approved a 50 percent tariff increase in January. The Nigeria Labour Congress has, however, condemned the implementation of a 50 per cent tariff hike by telecommunication companies, demanding an immediate reversal. Punch
