APC Convention: FG Orders Workers to Work from Home

The Federal Government has directed civil servants working within the Federal Secretariat in Abuja to work from home on Friday, March 27, 2026, ahead of the national convention of the All Progressives Congress. The directive was contained in a circular issued and signed by Abdul Garba, Permanent Secretary, Service Welfare Office, for the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation. According to the circular, all access roads leading to and around the Federal Secretariat Complex, Phases I, II and III, will be closed from Friday, March 27, to Saturday, March 28, 2026. “All Ministries, Extra-Ministerial Departments, Agencies and Offices located within the Federal Secretariat, Phases I, II & III are hereby informed of the closure of all access roads leading to and around the said Federal Secretariat Complex, from Friday, 27th to Saturday, 28th March, 2026,” the statement read. The government explained that the measure was necessitated by the use of Eagle Square for the APC national convention. “This is due to the use of Eagle Square for the National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Party on the said dates,” the circular stated. It further directed that workers in affected offices should stay off-site on the specified day. “Accordingly, all personnel whose offices are located within Phases I, II and III of the Federal Secretariat Complex as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, are to work from home on Friday, 27th March, 2026,” it added. The government also tasked heads of ministries, departments and agencies to ensure strict compliance with the directive. “All concerned Permanent Secretaries and Heads of Agencies are kindly requested to bring the content of this Circular to the attention of their staff, and ensure strict compliance,” the circular stated. The directive comes as the APC prepares to hold its national convention at Eagle Square, Abuja, a major political gathering expected to attract party leaders, delegates, and supporters from across the country. The convention, which will be held on Friday, is a key event where party officials are expected to deliberate on internal matters and set the tone for future political activities, including preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Man Kills Mother in Ebonyi

A 30-year-old man, Oforbuike Damian, has been arraigned before a Magistrate’s court in Abakaliki for stabbing his aged mother to death. The defendant was arraigned on a one-count charge bordering on murder. The Police Prosecutor, David Njoku, and Senior State Council told the court that the suspect committed the offences on March 19, 2026, at Ohatekwe village, Ukawu community in the Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. Njoku said the defendant caused the death of his mother, Mrs Onyema Damian, by stabbing her with a knife in the back. He noted that the offence was punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap 33 Vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi State, 2009. The defendant, who had no legal representation, told the court that he killed his mother for refusing to bathe him. “I don’t know what really happened, but I can remember that I killed her over her refusal to bathe me,” he told the court. The Chief Magistrate, Chinedu Agama, ordered that the defendant be remanded in a correctional centre, as the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the matter. Agama ordered that the case file and exhibits be forwarded to the Department of Public Prosecution for advice and further adjudication. He, therefore, adjourned the matter to April 9, 2026.

Nigerians to see Better Electricity Supply Within Two Weeks – Adelabu’s Aide

The Chief Technical Adviser to the Minister of Power, Adebayo Olowoniyi, says Nigerians should begin to see gradual improvement in electricity supply as maintenance work on a major gas pipeline nears completion, with full restoration expected within two weeks. Olowoniyi stated this on Thursday while appearing on Arise TV, days after the minister, Adebayo Adelabu, issued a public apology over the persistent power outages that have deepened hardship across homes, businesses, schools and industries in recent weeks. Defending the minister’s apology, Olowoniyi said it reflected strong leadership rather than an admission of personal culpability. “I think, first of all, I’d like to start with the apology from the Honourable Minister, which we believe is all about taking leadership in the sector. “Not necessarily directly his fault for the challenges that we have, but as the Minister of Power, he just took—it was the right leadership step to say, okay, I take ownership of this issue, and I’m going to prefer a solution that would ensure power supply comes back in the shortest available time,” Olowoniyi said. He explained that the current crisis was largely driven by disruptions to a key gas pipeline that supplies fuel to power plants, noting that about 75 per cent of Nigeria’s electricity generation is gas-dependent. “One of the major gas pipelines in Nigeria was undergoing maintenance, and gradually that process is being completed. We’re sure that within the next two weeks, full gas pressure will be back on the gas pipelines, and the power plants will be able to get enough gas at least to go back to their level of generation that they had in the last two to three months,” he said. Olowoniyi expressed confidence that the recovery process had already begun, saying improvements would be gradual but steady. “I would already say that from yesterday, we would have gradually started to see some improvement as the pressure on the pipeline gradually starts to build up, and we will see continuous improvement over the next couple of weeks,” he said. The development follows Adelabu’s public apology on Tuesday in Abuja, where he told Nigerians that the outages were caused by factors beyond the government’s immediate control but gave a firm two-week timeline for recovery. “I can tell you, with the committee that we have set up, and commitments from gas suppliers, and the timeline for repair of the gas pipelines, two weeks from now, we should start seeing improvements in supply. Two weeks,” Adelabu had said. The minister also reiterated the Federal Government’s target of ramping up electricity generation to 6,000 megawatts before the end of 2026, describing the current disruption as a temporary setback. Nigeria’s power sector has long grappled with a combination of inadequate gas supply, ageing infrastructure, transmission bottlenecks and persistent liquidity challenges across the value chain.

23-Year-Old US-Based Nigerian Graduate Killed by Fleeing Driver

A 23-year-old Nigerian graduate based in the United States, Oluwalayomi “Layo” Fadero, has been killed after a wrong-way driver fleeing from police crashed into her vehicle in Nashville, Tennessee. According to WSMV Nashville on Tuesday, the incident occurred last Friday when the suspect, identified as Ray Eugene Padgett, allegedly drove into oncoming traffic while attempting to evade arrest. Fadero, a recent graduate of Fisk University, was reportedly heading into her neighbourhood along Murfreesboro Pike when the suspect’s vehicle struck her car on the driver’s side, killing her on the spot. Metro Nashville Police confirmed the crash followed a series of incidents earlier in the day, beginning with the theft of a Ford F-250 truck from a car lot in North Nashville. Investigators said the suspect rammed the vehicle owner’s car while fleeing the scene before later crashing into an unmarked police SUV, triggering a pursuit that lasted about five minutes and reached speeds of approximately 80 miles per hour. “At about 2:30 p.m., the suspect drove into oncoming traffic and struck the victim’s vehicle,” police authorities were quoted as saying. The impact reportedly forced Fadero’s car about 100 yards into a ditch, with emergency responders confirming her dead at the scene. Authorities described her as an uninvolved motorist who had no connection to the chase. Padgett, 52, was later arrested and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries before being taken into custody. Police said he is facing multiple felony charges, including criminally negligent homicide, vehicular homicide by recklessness, attempted criminal homicide, and reckless endangerment. Authorities also disclosed that the suspect was on parole at the time of the incident and had at least 20 prior convictions across five counties in Tennessee. Fadero was said to have recently completed her degree and was pursuing an accelerated nursing programme at another institution before her death. “She was one of the most compassionate and kindest of people that you would’ve ever met,” her former professor, Janet Walsh, said. Another alumna, Jessica Williams, described her death as “heartbreaking,” noting that she was killed close to her residence. A makeshift memorial has since been created at the crash site, while counselling support has been made available to students and members of the university community. Meanwhile, a fundraiser organised by supporters has raised over $13,000 to assist with funeral expenses, as family and friends continue to mourn her sudden death. Police said investigations into the crash and the events leading up to it are ongoing.
