US President Donald Trump has dismissed growing calls for tighter controls on artificial intelligence, describing the concerns as a “sick conspiracy” and insisting that the United States must maintain its lead over China in AI development.
Trump made the remarks on Monday while attacking Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who recently called for a slowdown in AI development amid warnings that increasingly powerful systems could pose serious risks to humanity.
Trump Defends US AI Dominance
Trump argued that AI needs only a “strong and smart” president to provide oversight, adding that whoever wins the AI race will have a major advantage.
“The only control or ‘guardrails’ that AI needs is a strong and smart (High IQ!) President, and the USA has that, in spades!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
He also accused Amodei of presenting himself as a “perfect little angel” after previously raising concerns about the dangers of advanced AI.
Global Calls for AI Regulation Grow
Amodei’s call to “slow the pace” of AI development has received support from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk, while concerns over AI’s potential to fuel cyberattacks, create dangerous pathogens or contribute to other catastrophic risks continue to grow.
The United Nations rights chief, Volker Türk, on Monday urged governments and AI companies to act urgently, warning that the technology poses “unprecedented risks.”
Britain’s King Charles III is also expected to meet representatives of major AI companies in Scotland as global concerns over the technology intensify.
Despite the growing pressure for regulation, Trump and his administration have continued to emphasise AI development as critical to America’s economic, technological and national security interests.
